▲ Kim Eun-jeongTo further, know more about entering the international organizations and working with them, the Chung-Ang Herald (CAH) met Kim, Eun-jeong, second secretary of the United Nations division in Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade. She is an expert in giving people advice, who want to work in international organizations; information related to getting a job, and helping people.

Even though she had many businesses and she was very busy to work, she was pleased to give an interview to CAH and Chung-Ang University ’s students, who want to know more information about working in international organizations.

CAH: In these days, many people are interested in working in international organizations. Why are people interested in the subject like that?

Kim, Eun-jeong : I think that there are many reasons. The first reason is effect of globalization. In contrast to the past from mid-1990s, other countries have had a strong effect on our culture. Let us look at our surroundings. There are already many other countries’ cultures in Korea. In addition, it is not difficult for you to see foreign people.

Second, in many Korean universities, there are many divisions of international studies. After globalization, many Korean universities set up divisions of international studies. After students of division of international studies graduated from their school, they looking to work in international organizations.

Moreover, in Korea , for a long time, it has been difficult to get a job after graduation. Therefore, many people find a job outside the domestic border. They want to work abroad. Finally, some Koreans have had great succeess in international organizations, so others desire to go abroad for their job in the same manner.

CAH: In these circumstances, to work in international organizations, which qualifications do we meet?

Kim, Eun-jeong : First, it is very important to speak and use fluently a foreign language other than your native language. The UN’s official languages are English, French, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, and Arabic. Among these languages, English is essential to work in international organizations. Moreover, French is very important. Because 55 countries are in the French Bloc.(Speak French as a second language.) In addition, if an applicant can use one or two languages including English and French, it is very good.

Second, it is important whether or not an applicant has expert knowledge. For example like a doctor or a master, someone who has a degree is good to work in international organizations.

Third, having a clear career is significant in international organizations. Doing an internship or volunteer activity is helping when you apply for a job.

Finally, we must consider personality. Positive, optimistic and passionate personality is good. Moreover, we must know and acquire courtesy and manner.

CAH: For people who want to work in an international organization, how does government, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade help them?

Kim, Eun-jeong : we run a website www.unrecruit.go.kr to give many people information about getting a job. In the site, we give notice to people information about an unoccupied seat as soon as there are vacant seats in international organizations. Moreover, we register candidates in the list.

In addition, the JPO system is a representative example that the government officially supports people wanting to work in international organizations.

Finally, to advance a high official position, competition is very severe. However, to affect easily in international relations and improve national images, government practices all the wiles of diplomacy to get a high official position in international organizations.

CAH: Finally, as an expert, is there anything you want to say and advise to readers hoping to work in international organizations in the future?

Kim, Eun-jeong : The first step is to set specific goals. If someone wants to work there, he or she must know what to do in international organizations.

After setting the specific goals, start to study and gain an expert knowledge, and learn foreign languages including English because smooth communication with other workers is important. In addition, information and activities related to work in international organizations is needed.

However, to work in international organizations, the most important thing is a sense of duty about the job. Working in international organizations means becoming an international organizations official. International organization officials must volunteer for people in the whole world. Therefore, the volunteer sprit for the world is most important.

The world became globalized a very long time ago. In this circumstance, when people graduate from school and want to work in a company, many people want to enter an international organization and work there for the whole world. In addition, in society, global leaders are valuable anywhere. Many people are going to think and behave globally. Moreover, if people work in international organizations, they can earn a lot of money. Therefore, in these days, it is desirable to get a job of international organizations..

However, working in international organizations means becoming officials who must obey Charter of the United Nations and International Law, not native countries law. So, if someone works for benefit and distinctions of ones self, he or she does not have the qualifications to be an official in an international organization. If you want to volunteer for world peace and prosperity, and prepare attitude for working there, it is not bad for you to go to international organizations. Did you decide? Why do you hesitate? Let’s go to the great and prospective world!
