A swan waves his foot under water to go forward. Because of the foot’s effort, the swan swims beautifully on the water. Hyun-su Seuk art director wants to be the swan’s foot than the swan beautiful form. He wants to be foundation to develop society. So he said, “I am the happiest when I make people happy.”  He has an ability that makes people happy to just be, and not worry, which makes for a light atmosphere.

I am an art manager.

He is the first director of a major Korean musical. His career has mostly been about directing. When he majored in Korean music, many people thought that he might find directing difficult and hard.  He gained an artistic sense when he studied Korean classical music. Therefore, he was also good at directing. He is especially good at phrasing sequences. Nevertheless, he thinks that is his one weak point in directing. The weak point is about the story. He finds story making difficult and hard,because he majored in Korean classical music. However, he is good at making scenery beautifully rather making the story. In addition, he said that a person could a wear variety clothes. “If you like to wear a variety clothes, you can select many ways to your future. If you majored in law, you do not have to be a judge, a prosecutor, or a lawyer. You can be a director,  CEO, or other, and use your knowledge as it relates to law. I am an  example of this. Though I majored Korea classical Music, I am  an art director now.”

 He has many responsibilities as the art director. One of these is being ‘The Gangjin Celadon Cultural Festival’ consultant. ‘The Gangjin Celadon Cultural Festival’ consultant is a strange notion for normal people. Like the question “How shall we introduce ‘The Gangjin Celadon Cultural Festival’.” He answered, “The Gangjin Celadon Cultural Festival is one of the three best Korean festivals. The Festival won the best prize for six continuous years. I’m responsible for overseeing the foreigner day, and the closing ceremony.”

In addition, he was the cultural mission to the 2004 Athens Olympics. He often thinks about the street performance of the 2004 Athens Olympics in his produced work. The street performance was popular with foreigners. Many foreigners enjoyed the Korean cultural performance. “I felt we expressed art through our Athens street performance at that time. Many people enjoyed the performance without a language barrier. Art power transcends language and ethnic groups. Art links people together. Art is the best means to make peace and harmony.” Therefore, he wants to be on the cultural mission to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. “I want to produce street performances on Beijing streets again. I hope to reproduce again the impression I felt in Athens during the street performances. “If I don’t participate in the cultural mission, I will go to the Beijing Olympics personally.” To hear his story about street performance, the interviewer felt the greatest impression of art, too.

I love CAU!

He said that he loves Chung-Ang University (CAU). He graduated from CAU, and CAU’s graduate school. Now, he is the art director at the art center. Therefore, he does his best to develop the Art Center. University performance space is the best performance space. University performance space has the best facilities and circumstances. However, university performance space is not enough.” Therefore, he wrote a thesis that is related to university performance space. He would like to  make the University’s performance space more accessable,  make art more friendly for students and the local community. One of the ways is the screening of movies. “I visit film distribution agencies and gain film rights. The films are screened in the Art Center. The movies are for students, school officers, and the local community for a reasonable price”

“Why do you love CAU?” He smiled and answered this question. “Hum…A motto of CAU caught my fancy. The motto of CAU is ‘Die in honor, Live for truth.’ The sentence gave me a deep impression.” He said that honor is important in life. So he likes the motto of CAU. “Ah. I think the reason to love CAU now is that I was born in the Year of the Dragon. The symbol of CAU is blue dragon. Therefore, I love CAU. Hahaha.” He answered with humorous expression. After all is said and done, he is a happy evangelist.

He often remembers his CAU life. When he was a CAU student, he had many memories. Especially, he liked the swimming pool in front of the Music College and the lake. The place is filled with his memories. “When things were difficult and I was tired, the place cheered up me. My friends and I sought youth and gazed at stars from that place. I often took the boat on the lake. The place I remembered going when I was beaten and tired.”

He gives thanks to CAU’s President Park, Bum-hoon. He said that CAU’s President Park, Bum-hoon is his respected teacher. “He taught me many things. Especially, he gave me vision for my future. Without his help, I would not be an art director. So I thank him.”

My Life!

He thinks that the reason why his direction was art lies in my ability. He has talent. Especially he had creative power. He made many art works through initiative. His creative power and initiative is not used only for artwork but also a variety of things. The fusion restaurant “Negasake:” is representative of his initiative. The restaurant has many dishes, which he invented. He often invented many dishes and sauces. His famous invention is a triangle rice ball ‘Kado’. The ‘Kado’ was successful. Many franchises appeared. Now ‘Negasake’ is successful too. “My creative power is fusion. I used the strong point of one element in one section and adapted the other sections. For example, I grafted performance and screening. This way was successful in the same way I used to create fusion food and activities.

His family is artistic too. His wife is Korean dancer and his son is good at playing janggu. His daughter is famous for ‘Little Choi Seung-hee’. Because his family’s interest is equally his own, his family is always happy.

He wrote the book ‘Text of Love Skill’. He said that the book is a Japanese conversation book. “Conversation is easy but many conversation books were difficult for people. Therefore, I wrote the book. The book will teach people conversation easily through conversation related to love skills” Like his motto, Enjoy Life, his book is the conversation book which makes Japanese conversation enjoyable.

To tell CAU Students

“You love yourself!” I want to tell CAU students. If a person does not love oneself, the person cannot love other people. When you love yourself, then you can love other people. Therefore, you must think of yourself proudly. Enjoy life. If you think that life is funny and enjoy life, you live a happy life. CAU students love yourself and enjoy life!
