Have you heard of the ‘No Smoking Scholarship’? This year’s winner is is Lee, Ki-ung. Lee Ki-ung is from Baekseok University, and a sophmore, year 2. His major is currency. He always liked sharing his time with others, who smoked tobacco in his university life. But when he began his sophomore year, he determined to quit smoking. He felt that his body’s healthy condition was growing worse and the financial pressures of tobacco were expensive. During his time to quit smoking, he found it difficult, because he was afflicted with temptation from his friends, who still smoked. However, he braced himself against these temptations with thoughts about his health, and the benefits of receiving a university scholarship. When he interviewed with me, he said, “If my university didn’t have a ‘No Smoking Scholarship’, I probably won’t have accomplished my goal to quit smoking.”

The age of when only honor students receive scholarships has passed by. Usually, university students think that scholarships are only connected with honor students. However, lately, the scholarship system of the University was changing and becoming more friendlily to students. For example, each University is expanding their scholarship programs for foreign language advancement, and  officially recogniting foreign language grades. In addition, there are scholarships to encourage social services. Some universities give registration fee exemptionsfor  different kinds of prizewinners, and the latest are those scholarships for advancing the health of student and keeping upright habits.  

Konyang University has started a ‘Diet Scholarship’ from this year. The ‘Diet Scholarship’ is for a student, who hasreceived a wellness diagnosis with success through a regulated diet plan over a regulated over a period. The school gives  the scholarship to successful students. Konyang University says, “Many students are now seeking wellness training, because of this scholarship system. Therefore, the university plans to supply 0.5 to 1 million won for students’ tuition fees depending on how much weight they loose.

Another type of scholarship now available, called the ‘Wealth Scholarship’. Baekseok University and Konyang University are giving scholarships of 0.5 million won to students, who don’t smoke. Baekseok University requires a no smoking confirmation, and Konyang University requires a urine inspection.

Jeonbuk Jeonju University has established the “Superstar Training Program”. This program saves up self-improvement points acquired through the donation of blood, artistic accomplishments, foreign language abilities, and others. The scholarship is worth 3000 won per point earned by the student. The student, who accumulates points forartistic accomplishment can earn up to 200 points by the end of the year, and if a student, who raises their TOEIC score by 300 points can receive 20 points. Library errand and activities are worth 20 points each, and an internal organs presentation can earn a student 100 points. Joongbu University gives scholarships for certificates of qualification, and language grades. If a student borrows many books from the library, his points can piled up, and if a student moves his address, he or she can receive points.

However, we need to pay attention  to the foreign official records among these programs. Chonnam Food & Nutrition supports a 40,000 won for test application fees for those whose TOEIC score is from 500 to 800. They also give additional scholarship fees when students’ scores increases over 50. For those whose test score is over 700, they can gain an additional scholarship from 200,000 to 500,000 won. Seoul Women’s University students, whose TOEIC scores range from 600 to 900 can receive a scholarship based on their score increases on the TOEIC. In addition, they support scholarships for when students have certain level of scores in German, French, Japanese, Chinese, and Chinese character test. Furthermore, Chung-Ang University supports a 34,000 won application reduction for the TOEIC test for those whose score is above 800. When you get a certain level of score on the TOEIC in Sungshin Women’s University and Konkuk University, any school’s foreign language education is complimentary.

Additionally, there are social service, and obedience to one’s parents scholarships. Hallym University gives a scholarship for donating blood over 20 times. The person in charge of the scholarship says, “Donation of blood is a kind social service. I think that the University has taken on a role that is for a splendid service for the mind and is also a social contribution of students”. Additionally, Chonbuk, Hanyang, and Yonsei Universities give scholarships for helping the disabled caused by industrial disasters. Other kinds of scholarships include exemptions for school  association expenses, and a labor-scholarship. In addition, Hallym University has a new‘Tutoring Scholarship’. (Tutoring means that some senior helps a junior.) Gwangju University gives an exemption registration fee of 10% to 70% through holding a lottery for participating students in student leader elections.

A university that gives scholarships related to obedience to one´s parents is Baekseok and Hallym University. Baekseok University gives a scholarship of 500 thousand to 1500 thousand won for collecting obedience to one´s parents practice examples, and Hallym University exempts 30% of the registration fee to a student that is given a given a recommendation from the Dean.

So, what kind of scholarship programs are there at Chung-Ang University? Chung-Ang University has no novelty scholarship programs, but there are many kinds of scholarship programs andfoundations that do.

First scholarship is in related to state examination. If Chung-Ang University student passed the judicial examination and certified public accountant examination, that student exempted registration fee 100%. Next scholarship is in related to grade. But simply, students of top grade don’t give scholarship. Chung-Ang University was coming into operation grade improvement scholarship. This scholarship program is that focus how much improve grade. If average examination marks raised examination marks over 1.0, school gives scholarship. Additional, if you do activity of student’ association and in the University press activity, cheering party activity, you give a scholarship.

Chung-Ang University has total 83 scholarship foundation juridical. Each foundation juridical, a scholarship student selection basis is different. Of course, first importance basis is that you become honor student but these basis have special feature of each foundation juridical. These basis divided region native, company parent’s place of work, specification school subject, specification family name.

But, Chung-Ang university student doesn’t good use scholarship none the less these many scholarship programs and foundations juridical exist. School often was propagating about in the university scholarship. So, Why doesn’t student good use the scholarship? Of course student’s indifference holds a large part. But in need, students easy don’t use information of scholarship program that was supplied by school. Because after gaining information, they actuality don’t know organ that was connected with information and difficult finding person that advised about scholarship information.

Scholarship means that our University establishes more superior than other university and holds a dominant position than other university. If Chung-Ang University wants to accomplish this means, of course first student’s concern important. But school should know that student’s concern was occurred by school’s effort. So Chung-Ang University should prepare helper that offer and advise about scholarship information. Helpers must be trained information guidance education. And school should more prepare information advertisement for student. Advertisement should make that everyone easy can come in contract it. Also on flowing of age that University was making scholarship that didn’t feel burden about grade to student. Chung-Ang University should increase new scholarship programs that student feel familiar and free to drop.

Of course, this new special scholarship maybe causes bad influence to studies. Because this scholarship program gives to student that doesn’t large relate grade . An other problem is that school doesn't give  scholarship to many honor students. If special scholarship increases, grade superiority students that must receive scholarship  were lost chance.

But, school makes not only grade superiority students but also human of human. Although this scholarship program  large wasn't connected with grade, it will surely need in first thinking human respect.
