This year (2007) marks the Chung-Ang Herald’s 50th anniversary. While the Chung-Ang Herald has succeeded for 50 years, Chung-Ang University (CAU) has come up trumps. Listen to the experiences of some grateful employees that have been working for CAU’s students for years.

Chung-Ang University’s Healthcare Center; Her, Eun Hee

I remember two students, while working at the Chung-Ang University Healthcare Center. In the afternoon, one female student asked me for a consultation. I took her along to the consultation office to let her tell about her troubles. After a few minutes, she hesitated but carefully started talking. She told me that she had become pregnant. She wanted to have an abortion and asked me how she could get one.
First, I was very abashed, because she had already thought about aborting her child. When I finished listening to all of her troubles, I asked her to bring the man, who got her pregnant to me. The next day she came along with a male student.
My thinking had been that nobody should do something so final indiscriminately. Therefore, I persuaded her to sit on a bed, and decided to give her all the facts about abortions. First, I showed her a video about abortion. That video showed how horrible abortions can be. After 40 minutes, I consulted with them again. They said that they understood what was going on and left the Healthcare Center. I was very frustrated thinking about them and their child. Four years later, a married couple came to see me. They had 2 children. They said they were the same couple from 4 years ago and wanted to say thank you. They continuously said ‘thanks’ to me. If they had not watched the video about abortion and consulted with me, they would not have seen 2 lovely children, who were just like angels. When they came to see me, I was very happy. I was so thankful that they followed my advice. They had sought help for an abortion at the Clinic, because they were very poor and their parents opposed bearing babies. However, they loved each other very much and were confident in bringing up their children. They told me that they are living happily even though they are still poor with their children.

I tell this story to students today, who asked me to counsel them about abortion. It is my hope that they bear their children just like this married couple. I want everyone to know only one thing, that ‘Life is important’.

Chung-Ang University Guard Center; Chief Eun, Myung-pyo

I have experienced several confusing incidents during my career at Chung-Ang University.
For example, there was this time, when I was cleaning the school grounds. At that time, school facilities were very dirty, because students used to drink a lot of alcohol in the school. When I cleaned the school ground, I found a student’s wallet. I thought that a student dropped it, while he or she was drinking. I checked the student’s name and gave it to the Chung-Ang Student Center. Later the same week, an exorbitant happening occurred. The student came to me and requested that I give back his money, which was in his wallet. I was dumbfounded. I helped him find his wallet. Nonetheless, he did not appreciate it at all. This situation was just as the proverb says, ‘Save a stranger from the sea and he will turn your enemy’. I told him that I never touched his money. However, he did not believe it. After disturbing me for a while longer, he left me. This situation unfortunately happens to me and the cleaning ladies a lot. When I see ill-mannered students, I cannot help hoping to see them having a hard time.
This semester, freshmen have started attending Chung-Ang University, so they are going to drink a lot. Many students drink in front of school. I think that drinking is very good, because I can become familiar with each student. However, after drinking, students come to the school and break furniture or vandalize the school. Also, they drink inside school grounds and do not clean-up their wastes from drinking. The university campus is very dirty in the morning. I hope that Chung-Ang University students use the campus and its furniture appropriately and keep the school clean.

Chun-Ang University Shoe Store; Manager: Lee, Moo-ung

At first, I came to the Chung-Ang University because I wanted to help Chung-Ang university students. I started this work in 1980. However, I gained 23 student siblings during my career here. At first, I was hired as a Shoe Smith. A part time job like Shoe Smith was not common in the 1980s. I saw a lot of students, who were very poor during work hours. Therefore, I determined that I would give some money to students who live in poverty. However, I did not want to just give them money unconditionally. Therefore, I said that I would employ these students, who would work as Shoe Smiths. Thereupon, students came to see me each day. At first, students were ashamed of working as a Shoe Smith, because they were well-educated university students. However, they became proud of their jobs.
Therefore, I was very thankful to them. I made them work hard, not only as Shoe Smiths, but also in their school life. For example, I checked whether they went to their classes on time and   were studying hard. I let them make their own schedule and gave them extra time off when they needed breathing time to study their majors. It was impossible for them to loaf around, because I had their schedules.
We also had picnics. When we went to the picnic, I was a king. I ordered everything for them and let them take a rest comfortably. Among the 23 students I sponsored this way, there were two women students. When we went to the picnic, these two women students would cook the meal. I thought that the food made by these two women was wonderful. Therefore, I especially loved them. The 23 students were concerned about each others health. One day, one student was very sick. Therefore, all the students came to the hospital to see him. When I saw what they did for him, I was impressed by them. At that time, I convinced myself of their true friendship.
When these students were seniors, I was concerned for their future employment. Most of the students lived in poverty, so when they were interviewed, they did not even have suits. Therefore, I gave them my suits, shoes, and a watch to wear to the interview. I also fixed their old shoes. I think, at that time, they were as my children and my friends. I gave nicknames to them and called them by their nicknames. I felt that I was getting younger because I lived with them. In those days, I had a lot of fun with them, and shared in their sadness and happiness. Now, when I see them successful, I am happy, too. Their jobs include: an owner of a foreign company, the President of a Bank, and a Teacher. They are working at jobs that they wanted to do. We have continued to gather once a month. We have meals, drinking. We go to a Karaoke bar for singing. I am old now, but I still enjoy this time with them.
One day, they bought a new car for me, and gave it to me. They said “Uncle! On your 70th birthday, we will buy you a better car!” I have made many appearances in broadcasting including KBS (Korean Broadcasting System), MBC (Munhwa Culture) Broadcasting Corporation), and EBS (Educational Broadcasting System), because of my students’ popularity. Do you know the talented Son, Chang-min? He did not work actually as a Shoe Smith; however he used to go on errands for me. I appeared in some talk shows, because he asked me to.
Many Chung-Ang University students do not know that I love them very much. I wish that I could help them all, and give them everything I have. I have never regretted working in Chung-Ang University. I feel thankful to CAU for the life I have had. It is my hope that I can work at this job until I die.
