Instead of watching gag programs like that, it is not bad to look for a smile from other types of comedy. Here, the people, who want to make a present out of a smile to all people, have prepared a play. The ‘Human Comedy’ tries to send smiles out to society through real comedy.
“There is no reason!” shouts a comedian in one of the gag programs. Many of the gag comedies force smiles without any reasons. The people just smile, while watching their tortured appearance and situation. Contrary to that, the ‘Human Comedy’ shows something different. When you watch it, you can smile understanding a flow of stories.
It divides three repertories. The repertories are called ‘Family’, ‘Naengmyeon’, and ‘Chase’. In the first stage of the ‘Family’ repertory, the people expect an explosive laugh. Like a new-school drama, it shows comedy in the tragedy. In the ‘Naengmyeon’ repertory, there can be a misunderstanding, about something somewhat boring. One needs to a read brochure or something to explain about it. These two repertories are played out in a comparatively quiet scenario.
However, when the people want an opulence of comedy, they can watch the last repertory of comedy, the ‘Chase’. An actor needs speed, because they have to change from one role to another, up to four roles in seconds. It flows rapidly. It seems to be an opulence of different comedy. However, something can feel amiss. What do they want to say? It can feel at the slightest slip as if you are watching a comedy that has no comedic difference between the others.
The ‘Family’ has a warmness and love of family members. ‘Naengmyeon’ shows through comedy what all people have such as a natural feature or a normal mistake or fear. It can have the same feeling or same quality of emotion. What people criticize is the ‘Chase’. The actors show a lot of problems in a short period of time, and on one stage. For example, top talent and high ranking officials meet secretly; paparazzi chase them for their own profits. Also, there is a ‘Chase’ focused a minor girl, who works in a tearoom as a waitress. ‘Human comedy’ especially ‘Chase’ shows lots of social irregularities.
The interesting thing is ‘Human Comedy’ actors use only six members. In case of “Chase’, there are total of 14 roles. When you watch this play, you can think that their effort and practice for a perfect play makes sense of today’s ‘Human Comedy’.
Kwon: The last performance is one of the acts within the play. We decided to show all, because many spectators were left wondering what was happening. We do not always put an end like this in the play, but we can reveal our hidden efforts this way. Originally, the ‘Human Comedy’ did not plan for anything like this. After it showed, the reaction from the audience was good, more so than from the past.
CAH: What plans are there in the future?
Kwon: We are planning that the ‘Human Comedy’ move permanently to ‘Daehak-ro’. So, we will perform the play again at the end of the year.
A similar play, the ‘Sadari Movement lab’, was asked to officially perform in Edinburgh, Germany, and Poland, because this play is a study mainly in movements, rather than langauge. We will also play 'Woyzeck (Boycheck)'. Likewise, the 'Human Comedy' also shows movement in the play. They will put more and more effort into the play and give a smile to all people.
