‘A new term, I need new experiences!’
A number of Chung-Ang university students started the new term with fresh determination, They have applied for overseas volunteer programs. However, if you go to foreign countries with no definite objective in mine, you can end up wasting your important time and face accidents. To help with this situation, you can now search for overseas volunteer organizations. If you enter one of these organizations, you can cut down costs of fright tickets and meet other university students, who have the same mindset for volunteering. Above all, you can learn about your character in these organizations’ programs in foreign countries.
Welcome to Global Peace Maker (GPM)!

= CAH: GPM seeks new overseas volunteers every October. How do you select volunteers and what should we do to prepare for these oversea volunteer activities?
= Kim: GPM sends official documents every season for registration. We sent this official documentation to all universities, which are located in Seoul. If you haven’t seen our volunteer advertisement, you can apply on our website. Then, our basis of selection is divided into several parts. First, we ask, “What is your reason for applying for GPM?” Second, we ask, “How many students have applied in the registration period?”, and last we ask, “What is your special ability for volunteer activities?”
Selected students meet with each other online. In this online meeting, they start to prepare for the programs they will be involved in. Of course, we provide general plans, so that students can make detailed preparations for the programs. We select a detail program, and evaluate the plans, and we reflect about our operations.

= CAH: GPM has been operating three programs, challenge/culture, exchange/internal and overseas volunteer activities. Can you introduction these useful programs to readers?
= Kim: GPM camp needs at least 2~3weeks. The attached program is CGL.
CGL is a simpler form of the Culture Game Leisure program. This program is operated with friends and physically handicapped people, who cannot receive benefits. Another is named emergency relief activities. This program is operated with other foreign GPM offices. This program started after the 9/11 attack in New York. At that time, GPM had worked with Korean students studying in America. Most of the students thought, ‘GPM camp is a volunteer camp, so all GPM programs are about volunteer activities’. However, half of the programs are overseas volunteer activities and the rest are about studying history or developing personal growth programs. We study history and tour historic sites with the countries’ university students. This October, many interesting programs are waiting for volunteers with comprehensive plans.

= CAH: Introduction GPM to readers.
= Shin: GPM is an organization with a small number of students. So, we easily, become familiar than other organizations. During the later part of the volunteer activities, we regularly have meetings and make friendships with each other. Do you like to help others? If you like to help others, take part in our GPM. You can feel volunteer work is so important and so easy. Come on!
= Park: In my opinion, GPM has a variety of programs. Volunteer activities, allow students to experience other cultures, and provide an opportunity for self-examination, and so on. So, if you join the GPM, you can experience these programs. I think many think that volunteer work is so difficult, and this alone gives a vast meaning to oneself. So, they do not easily decide to experience volunteer activities. However, take it easy! Enter our GPM, you can get information about overseas volunteer activities and get an aptitude for living. All of those things are waiting you!

= CAH: What is GPM?
= Kim:  I think GPM is a ‘trip for myself’.
If you go abroad for 15~20 days for volunteer activities with GPM, you can find out about yourself, and notice how happy you are. In the past, Korea was helped by other countries, so we can repay our obligation to other countries with our volunteer activities, and to study history. Not only will you find out about yourself, but also learn about world history. These programs are like a ‘trip for myself’.
= Shin: I think GPM is ‘a diplomatic mission’.
This year, I experienced my first GPM camp. I traveled to the Republic of Indonesia.
Our GPM friends flew the national flag of Korea, and we taught Korean folk games to Indonesian children. We informed them about our country. So, I think GPM is like ‘a diplomatic mission’.
= Park: I think GPM is a ‘turning point’.
We travel for self-examination, and extend our knowledge through interchange with other university friends and foreign people. In this way, we change and never return to our original self.
