CAU are visualizing this establishment as an opportunity to change into a University centered on high-tech research. CAU has declared that they will establish a global campus and make good on their name by inviting foreign students, researchers and professors. According to the agreement, CAU has a plan to organize specialized programs on the Hanam Campus, which is fused with Information Technology (IT) and Biotechnology (BT). Second, to cultivate the talent of global CAU students, CAU will organize the International Study Department. Third, the department in relation to foreign language and international trade, facility of social education, various research institutes and an educational center for foreign students will be set-up at the Hanam Campus. After then, Hanam Campus will be able to accommodate ten thousand people and five hundred professors. Fourth, CAU has a detailed plan to operate a world-class educational program and dual degree system. Fifth, CAU will attract a research center of global enterprises and develop R&D Park to conduct research in fields of high-tech scientific technology. Through this project, CAU expects to build the innovative cluster in connection with industrial foundation in Hanam City.
Park Bum Hoon, the President of CAU revealed his ambition. He wants to develop Hanam City as a ‘University City’, which is a well furnished high tech industry such as in Cambridge, U.K. According to his remarks, this establishment is a stepping-stone to jump into the 100 prominent Universities of the world by 2018.
CAU and Hanam City will make up the building site and infrastructures from 2008 to 2009. Then, they will progress construction of educational institutes and subsidiary facilities from 2010 to 2013. If this plan is realized, Hanam Campus will be the first campus built in Paldang (eastern Gyeonggi Do) range. Hanam will contribute to the economical and educational revitalization of the surrounding towns.
However, the establishment of Hanam Campus is not progressing satisfactorily. Under the present law, a University campus cannot be built in a limited development district. For this reason, Gyeonggi Do, Hanam City and CAU agreed to cooperate to revise the existing law if the total development plan is approved. A revised bill of this law will be proposed in June, but the bill is still pending in the National Assembly. Hanam City set a policy to have active discussion with the Ministry of National Defense for purchasing the vacant land. CAU will argue over the establishment tentatively named, ‘The Council of Hanam Campus Development’.
