Mud has become a regular meal because of the rising prices and food shortages in the Republic of Haiti. It has been used as an antacid and source of calcium, but it is dangerous since the dirt may contain parasites or toxins. Thus, now, Haitians cannot help staving off hunger by eating mud cookies that are made of dirt, salt and vegetable shortening.
