Someone’s birthday, wedding anniversary, or a declaration of love… Radio is between media’s public character and individual privacy. Therefore, it is friendly. Like a precious old friend to humanity! As expected, many directors were fascinated by its priceless appearances.

[Radio Star / Pump Up the Volume]

If it is a true heart, it must be understood.
There are two similar films, which tell a story about a gloomy DJ and his enthusiastic listeners. The first one is called ‘Radio Star’ (2006), which cares about the deep companionship between two main characters (a singer and a manager). The singer is a former rock star, who becomes a rural DJ, and his manager takes care of him. Lastly, the film is about the warm-heart aspect of radio’s programming. When a coffee shop woman Ms. Kim apologizes to her mom with tears on the air, people start to listen in to the radio program. Listeners make many phone calls to the radio station and tell about their life with rustic stories. The gloomy rocker turned DJ opens his mind to radio’s attraction.
The second film is about Mark Hunter, the hero in ‘Pump Up the Volume’ (1990). Mark is a teenage DJ of a pirate radio. He is a quiet student in school (has no friends at all), but every night at 10 o’clock, he transforms himself into a wild glib talker DJ, Hard Harry. He talks about teenagers’ troubles and always shouts, “So Be It.” All about injustices at school, the irony of society and sexual problems are disclosed by Hard Harry. Wild rock, rap music songs are added, too. Teenage listeners go fanatic with Harry’s forthright broadcasting. Harry’s radio broadcast caused many problems for the local society but it was a real communication window for adolescents.

[Radio-days]
Infinitely Light Radio Drama Story
‘Radio-days’ (2007) is a story about the first Korean radio drama, ‘Spark of Love’. It is a comedy. There are 2%-shorted characters, continual ad-lib accidents, frequent script failures, and set during the Japanese imperialism era’s background. Under all of these troubles, the first radio drama has an incredible popularity. Several small points which only existed in radio, such as creating sound effects, actors’ wearing many hats are interesting. However, there is not much of a message. P.S: ‘Welcome Mr. Macdonald’ (1997) has similar story line, too.

[Jakob the Liar]
Lie, Hope and Radio
In ‘Jakob the Liar’ (1999) there is no visible radio. Only an imaginary radio exists in the Jewish people’s head. Owning a radio is prohibition to Jews under the Nazis. The hero Jakob is misunderstood as having the ‘radio’ by Jewish neighbors. He talked to his neighbors about Russian’s news or information about the war, which he just happened to hear at a Nazi’s radio station. Finally, Jakob decides to lie. ‘The hopeful lie’ is getting more and more big. However ironically, Jakob’s lies send hope to the Jewish people. That is the message of the film. Jakob also tells in the last scene. “Until the last line has been spoken, the curtain cannot come down.”

[View Radio / Radio Star]

Visible Radio vs Audible TV, New Idea about Radio
Radio has transformed. ‘Visible Radio’ and ‘Audible TV’ are representatives. Visible Radio is a radio program that ‘shows’ all the processes of radio broadcasting. Listeners can see an imaginary radio studio, DJ and guests. KBS, MBC, SBS radios all have it as a title view radio.

The ‘Audible TV Radio Star’ is a corner of MBC’s entertainment program, ‘Goldfish’. Its slogan is ‘The Top DJs Have Gathered Together in Television’. It wants to be a no-burden, slightly interesting corner just as most radio programs’ character. On radio and on TV, Visible Radio and Audible TV have conducted its new idea of radio respectively.
