Presidents stand in the middle of a political storm of power. Many people are concerned about presidents and their actions, but we only see the official figure of the president through TV and newspapers. It is natural that we become curious about their real lives and privacy, as we cannot usually see this side of a President. The President’s imagine can become attractive material for story lines that movie makers cannot deny using as they produce a movie. An image of the president that is created by moviemakers are different from the reality. What is the image of the president on the screen?

It is possible only on the screen
A heroic story appears frequently in Hollywood movies. Material about presidents are not exceptional. Hollywood’s blockbuster movies invest enormous funds in making a president a hero or a superman. The president as a hero in the movie fights against the enemy. Of course, he saves the nation and sometimes saves the entire world as if he becomes the symbol of a president of the whole world. Through that movie, Hollywood implies American Supremacy, because Hollywood’s exporting all over the world, viewers of the world may believe in American Supremacy naturally through movies.
The movie ‘Independence Day, 1996’ and ‘Air Force One, 1997’ are representative of this type of movie. In ‘Air Force One’ the president, acted by Harrison Ford, is a Vietnam Veteran, however, his action scene is so excessive that viewers cannot stop laughing at it even if it is a Hollywood movie. He fights against terrorist like a special agent. The president in ‘Independence Day’ acted by Bill Pullman even flies a fighter jet and fights against aliens directly. Above all, that movie is the best one to present America Supremacy so that it makes Independence Day; the Forth of July not for the Americans’ but for the all humans’. It is said President Bill Clinton wanted to see the movie early, so he received a copy before it was released.

Not in reality, please~
One of the nice points of the movie is satire. Movies can criticize a variety of social problems second hand. Of course, a president who stands in the middle of every grand scheme is not an exception. In the movie, his action is very funny, but if he acted like a president in the movie, it would be awful.
In ‘Dr. Strangelove, 1964’ the U.S President and drunken Soviet President speak regrettable words. Ahead of the possibility of the outbreak of a nuclear war, they show their composure. They cannot help regretting their actions in the past. However, the result of the summit talks remains, and the story become the essence of a black comedy. Another movie, ‘Mars Attacks, 1996’ also shows a funny president. Before he meets aliens on behalf of all men, he does not care about negotiations, but his coordination. How awful are they!
Unlike these, there are movies developed about potential real scandals. For example, ‘Murder At 1600, 1997’, ‘Absolute Power, 1997’, ‘Wag the Dog, 1997’, and ‘Primary Colors, 1998’ deal with material about the potential national crisis when politicians’ have sex scandals, such as the Clinton Sex Scandal. ‘All The President’s Men, 1976’ and ‘Dick, 1999’ deal with the Watergate scandal that resulted in the ultimate resignation of President Nixon himself.

President is also a human being.
Many people are curious about the president’s romantic life. Whenever the president is elected and has an interview, he receives a question about his relationship with his wife, the first lady. In the movies material of the president’s romantic relationships, strangely show presidents as single and falls in love with normal woman. It can be taken as a modern edition of a Cinderella story. The president, who appears in the movie, is attractive, so he makes viewers want him to exist in real life.
There are two similar movies in home and abroad, ‘The American President, 1995’ and ‘The Romantic President, 2002’. ‘The Romantic President’ is even called ‘The American President’. Both presidents on the screen have a similarity that they not only fall in love with a woman, but also are humane and good at state affairs. A romantic movie makes the president look warm-hearted and tender through love. Especially the president in the ‘The Romantic President’ seems to say a lot to the current situation. In that movie, the president perseveres in his efforts to listen to the demands of common people. In addition, both movies show the same thing, as the actors portray the president as attractive and act well.

Believe it or not
A conspiracy theory frequently appears in both movies and political circles. Moviemakers cannot remain indifferent to conspiracy theories about presidents. When it comes to movies about conspiracy theories, the president makes a plot to protect himself, or there are various plots against the president, made by enemies or an original incident is recreated as conspiracy. However, they have something in common in that nobody knows the essence of the incidents.
A dramatic incident such as the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan are repeatedly handled on the screen. Particularly the assassination of President John F Kenney is attractive to moviemakers because the details of the assassination are as much in the dark as ever. ‘JFK, 1991’ suggests that he is not dead. This movie creates a sensation of the American people that the real facts of the case have to be revealed.
‘Wag the Dog’, ‘Absolute Power’, and ‘Primary Colors’ related to Sex Scandal also are connected to a plot. The president causes a sex scandal, and then plots to hide his conduct. The president manipulates the press, fabricates murders, bribes people and fakes DNA tests in each movie, ‘Wag the Dog’, ‘Absolute Power’, and ‘Primary Colors’. It is lucky to be disclosed about the Clinton Sex Scandal.

Presidents portrayed in these movies make us think about a good president. As we see in the movie, we wish that the president on the screen actually exists or think how luckily we are that such a president as created by the movie writers do not really exist. When we compare a president from the movies to real presidents, who do you want for president?
