Have you ever read the novel, 1984?
First published in 1949, this story spread fear by making people imagine how the power of media could be used in the future. This shocking prospect influenced many other works such as Equilibrium and the music video, Promise You.. The book, ‘1984’, describes the world divided into three parts. One country controls its citizens by enforcing a totalitarian ideology. The government uses the media to control people’s thinking and to isolate them from other information sources. In the novel, people were confused by the information provided by the government. Over fifty years ago, George Orwell predicted the media would create a homogeneous ideology.
In 2006, the Korean Society Opinion Institute announced that an outlet of expression is the most powerful method used to form public opinion. Since then, the media’s voice has been getting louder. However, what is the percentage of people who have faith in the Media’s information? It is very low. People are confused. There is a comprehension problem.
The media always manipulates information to get results or effects that promote its ownership’s personal agendas. The media affects people’s attitudes, opinions, actions, and beliefs, because the media is their main or only source of information about current events and government actions. A premise of this effect is that people are persuaded to the same line of thinking as the information presented. The media persuades people to act in certain ways or shows them the way to act. As Orwell outlined in his novel, these type of media discussions work as an ideological method for the ruling power as a useful way of widening and/or repressing the rights of personal power or free speech.
Recent news reports about the Chinese-Tibet conflict show examples of this. China is on the chopping block of foreign news sources, because they block the ability of Tibetan citizens to voice their opinions worldwide. When violent clashes erupted, Chinese sympathizers and other international broadcasting systems insisted on reporting the violence.

-Shinhwa: This fight was about stopping the separation of Tibet from China, and to continue unification and ethnic solidarity with China. Following an investigation of the violent events, more severe violence was projected by the Dalai Lama group. They then deliberately moved and acted by relating the elements of Tibetan independence around the world.

CNN- Tibet: A Tinderbox of Tensions.
Tension between Tibetans and Chinese authorities exploded into violence in Lhasa this week. This is nothing new, with longstanding troubles turning the region into a tinderbox where anger regularly comes to the surface.
As the date of the anniversary neared, Chinese authorities tightened their control, shuttering businesses that arranged tours for Westerners and closing off monasteries and areas beyond Lhasa.

Focused on the same event, two media sources reported in different voices. After CNN reported about human rights and Tibetan issues, the Chinese citizens blamed CNN for their partial report. China insisted that Western reporters were distorting the facts without the basic principles of journalism (truth, objectiveness, and fairness). Additionally, they said Western news sources were shouting about anti-terrorism, but the major media only reported that the Tibet extremists were weak.
Although China was sensitive because of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the international press was assured that this sensitivity would not be a reasonable excuse for closing the entire door of information that could be reported by the media. Other examples are the issues of Dokdo and China’s Northeastern Project. In these cases, the perspective we chose can even change our opinion; as I would read about these issues, ‘this first’, in the paper.
Expressions used by each media source can give us clues to find the character of them; for example the candlelight demonstration. Once, the Chosun Ilbo, JungAng Ilbo and DongA Ilbo, (also called Cho.Jung.Dong) stopped the news supply to the Daum network community because of advertisers. However, HanKyuRe were applauded by their advertisers for representing the voice of the weak. Some citizens watched Cho.Jung.Dong’s actions and changed to HanKyuRe.
As I mentioned above, there are lots of local newspapers or magazines in a country. Newspapers were born in the mind of someone. It is not possible to anticipate that every reporter looks at an issue in the same way with the same depth. Correspondents just write the story, often without exact facts due to time and research limitations. They look into the problem and collect hints to tell the story to readers.
The ideological traits of each news media can be found in the headlines and pictures. It is noticeable when newspapers deal with President Lee. Pro-president policy newspapers have never put the wrinkled face of the President in the newspaper. It is very clear when you compare articles with the same subject and theme between Cho,Jung,Dong and KanKyuRe or KyungHyangIlbo. Regarded as a newspaper against big-journal companies, the mainstream HanKyuRe definitely lowered the Presidential image when compared to the others. For instance, in a serious forum or conference, they show his poor eyesight or he acts stupid.
Korean newspapers are suffering from the threat of monster-news media. Large industrialized press companies have no room to take on requests, but must remain consolidated with a ruling ideology. Public opinion is flexible. However, opinions suggested by some press corporations are not a discussion but an ideology. Often people are misled to accept biases.
Due to these elements, is it possible to stand alone as an objective source? Reporters sincerely report articles as best as one can. Therefore, articles are an interpretation of the truth that is attained by a journalist doing his or her best. Producers’ intentions and insights are different and so are the audiences’.
As the media has been doing all along, we will continue to keep a close watch on the media in our everyday life and put the puzzles of current events and government actions on the board to add to the stream of voices.
