Ensemble Symmetry, a musical group from Germany, held a concert at The National Theater of Korea on September 7th. The sculptures of Moonshin are to be sublimated in music, a concept which has aroused the interest of many. Ensemble Symmetry, or the Moonshin international ensemble, was established in 2006 by eight musicians (from Korea, Germany, and Japan) of international fame who were fascinated by Moonshin’s art. Every year, they collect musical pieces from international composers inspired by the works of Moonshin and perform these in Korea, Germany and other countries.

The attempt to express the artistic world of Yun I-sang and Moon Shin, two great Korean artists, in an opening ceremony of Moon Shin's Sculpture Exhibition held in Baden-Baden, Germany in 2006 drew a great deal of attention from many Europeans, and since then, efforts to express the arts of Moon Shin through the use of music has continued to be made.

In particular, symmetry expressing unity, harmony and balance that is consistently found in Moon Shin's sculpture evoked creative inspiration in music, a different genre from the fine arts and acted as a new medium contributing to recreating Moon Shin's art works in musical notes. Ranging from Loneliness and Oneness of the Moon by Boris Joffe and Eleonthit by Andrea Kerstin to Symmetry of Arts by Wolfgang Maschner, a great German artist, the artistic world of Moon Shin has been reinterpreted through music continuously attracting attention of the European music circles instead of the Korean music world. Its duration is 120minutes (Intermission : 20 minutes).

Youngguk Lee, member of BadenBaden and leader of Ensemble Symmetry, expressed his affection for Moonshin’s art during the establishment ceremony of Ensemble Symmetry, stating “When we saw different genres meet to express the works of one artist and listened to the music derived from his sculptures, it was an exciting experience for young musicians.” This concert provided the perfect venue to appreciate Moonshin’s works through the beautiful melodies inspired by them.

In Independence Day of Korea, President Lee said on creating national-brand of Korea for Korea’s culture. But, this attempt to make “Korea’s culture brand” was already started by Ensemble Symmetry Concert in Korea.
