Elly Nowell - a 19 year old student - had applied to Oxford, one of the most prestigious universities in the world. However, instead of waiting intently for an acceptance letter like all students do, Nowell decided to send a rejection letter instead. She wrote the letter in the same form that Oxford would send when rejecting its applicants. Nowell notified her rejection of Oxford by stating, “I very much regret to inform you that I will be withdrawing my application. Your school may be disappointed by this decision, but it was in competition with many fantastic universities, and your college does not quite meet up to my standards.” As it turns out, Nowell was not happy with Oxford’s admission process, which she believes to be biased against state-school students, while favoring private schools. Nowell also scoffed at how the interviewers treated everything so seriously, criticizing the school’s pride in tradition and rituals and insisting that the university should change its ways in order to grow in the future.
