When you think of 80s vivid color will come to your mind first. Unlike these days which emphasize minimalism, 80s were in love with exaggerated color, pattern, and shape. Power shoulder jacket or colorful leggings, skinny jeans are the good examples of 80s fashion coming back. Also, polka dot, stripe, flower patterns are the 80s comeback as well. In 80s, students in University wore exaggerated clothes to follow trend, or wore hair band, scarves to show their immaculateness. 80s’ fashion icons were Madonna for women and Michael Jackson for men. Michael Jackson was huge pop singer and he was a fashion forward star with his unique style. Every album he released, He pursed different style which were all popular among guys all over the world. Because of Michael Jackson, leather jacket, overly done hair, glitters were ‘it’for men. Madonna also a huge pop star all over the world tried new and different fashion that every girl could follow. She was a real trend setter in 80s. Most of you would think of her as a sex icon because of her sexy style in her most famous album ‘Like a virgin’ However, jean jacket, oversized belts, and red lipsticks were girl’s item that she started to wear.
80s fashion in the movie ‘Sunny’
On second half of 2011, Korea’s movie ‘Sunny’ competed with the great Hollywood film ‘Transformer 3’ on screen. The movie ‘Sunny’ portrayed 80s days so all generation had a chance to enjoy. ‘Sunny’ not only portrayed the days of 80s but also it showed 80s trend as well , which audience found really impressive. Every character in the movie represents all the different fashion trend on 80s according to their personalities. 80s ‘it’ fashion trend like all jean fashion, polka dots, stripe, diamond pattern appeared on movie ‘Sunny’ displaying 80s. For example, Chun-wha who is strong and confident wears striped big collar shirts and training wears to emphasize her tenacity, and Su-ji who is the prettiest girl in the movie tends to wear long silk skirts and white blouse.
80s fashion comeback in the showbiz
Currently in showbiz you can see a lot of 80s fashion comeback especially in the world of singers. 2NE1 who drew people’s attention with their unique style wears a modern version of 80s clothes. Big patterned clothes, leggings, accessories and such are their fashion and it is similar to the items that were it in the 80s. Also, girl group T-ara who were at the head of retro trend interpreted 80s fashion with modern sense. Their songs ‘Roly-poly’ and ‘Lovey Dovey’ have a 80s feeling. On the stage, when they are performing those songs, they wear polka dots, bell bottoms, high waist pants, stripe, hair band, all jeans, oversized sunglasses and such which were in 80s fashion trend to show the 80s. On screen fashion forward actress like Gong Hyo-jin, and Kim Min-hee style themselves with 80s ‘it’ item such as high waist pants, big blouse and jean jackets.
Fashion and trend are the things that go round and round. Just like items that were ‘it’ in 80s are now in fashion again, something that looks outdated and countrified might become one day’s trend.
