Vietnamese regional authorities have recently enacted strict measures regarding the international marriage between Korean men and Vietnamese women. Starting as early as April this year, Korean men over 50 will not be able to marry Vietnamese women. In addition, the regional authorities put out that if the age difference between the Korean male and Vietnamese female exceed 16 years, the marriage will not be accepted. Such measures were taken because international marriage has often been criticized in the past as many couples suffer a tragic outcome of broken marriage involving violence and cultural difference. Not only that, some point out that the so-called international marriage resembles human trafficking.
Korea has experienced such restrictions in the past. The Cambodian government once declared the marriage between Korean men and Cambodian women is forbidden. Afterwards, the government decided to alter the restriction and partially allowed the marriage if the Korean male would meet certain criteria. At this point, it is necessary for the Korean government to intervene and resolve the situation before the matter escalates into a diplomatic dispute. Although the current measure by Vietnamese regional authorities cannot be considered a policy set by the Vietnamese government, it represents the fact that broken marriages are harming the reputation of Koreans within Vietnam.
Hence, the Korean government should enforce stricter law on international marriage and help the Vietnamese women who were victims of these international marriages. First, Korean government should include and improve the education on international culture and diversity in the core subjects taught to students across the board. Korea, being a nation which once pursued isolation from international society in the past, is still unfamiliar with foreigners dissolving into its society. Thus, the change in the minds of growing students would benefit the society in the future. Second, the Korean government should focus more attention on persons engaged in international marriage, and promote research among the families to gain academic data in order to provide help to the families. Last but not least, the Korean government should also declare a stricter standard for Korean males who wish to get married to Vietnamese females to show that Korean government is also trying to improve the quality of life among international families.
