Around February the center that used to be for gender equality was transformed into the first in-campus human rights center in Korea. As can be expected, now the center not only takes care of any type of sexual violence or harassment, but also cases that are related to human rights abuse are now taken care of as well such as matters such as foreign students being discriminated for their race or because of where they were born,
Just like what the gender equality center used to do, the human rights center will do most of the policies in the same manner apart from the fact that it has been widened to include human rights as well. That will include holding a measures committee for incidents that seek more attention, researching on the actual conditions concerning human rights and educational campaigns.
CAH did a short interview with Lee Un-shim, from the center for human rights

Q Why did the gender equality center change into the human rights center?
A Well, that was mainly because we noticed that there were people coming to the center many cases other than women discrimination. Actually, the gender equality center was supposed to only handle situations where sexual harassment or violence is involved, but statistics showed that that was not the case. So we expanded the counseling center so that it will have two departments – gender equality and human rights.
Q What kind of activities does the center do?
A Actually we haven’t made concrete plans yet and we are planning to finish the plans on the first half. But we are certainly going to campaign for human rights and take censures on how CAU’s students think and approach the idea of human rights.
Q Are there any events or things to make public that will happen this month? What kind of activities have been going on?
A No actually since we’re doing mostly planning for this month, there aren’t many things to make public. However the center has been very busy for the last 2 months. On the 24th of February there was education about prostitution targeted to the professors of CAU, sexual harassment prevention education was done on all the freshmen orientations and there also has been education going on in the dormitories about human rights for foreign students. Also, in the future we are planning to make online education possible as well on the CAU portal site and we are planning to open at around the end of April.
