Before the lecture, The Dean of The General Education Department of CAU, Cho Suk-hee, said “I hope that this special lecture can help CAU students in their classes and hopefully in the future,” also adding “On behalf of CAU and The General Education Department, I’m honored to welcome Na Seung-yeon who is a noted speaker who moved cosmopolitans minds, and also one of the presenters who dedicated their time so that Pyeong-chang can host The 2018 Winter Olympics. I’m certain that students will learn a lot from the lecture.”

For ninety minutes the lecture went on. The special lecture by Na was special for CAU students.  Na emphasized communication by saying “Presentation is a communication or communion itself with counterparts. It’s not something that can be done in a special and official conference or lecture, but something that includes relationships with people in their daily lives.” The lecture’s contents were divided into two big sections, one was ‘Successful Presentation’, and the other was ‘Giving Strong Impressions as a Speaker’. For the first part of the lecture ‘Successful Presentation’, she introduced a keyword, 3P (Picture, Purpose, Practice), and for the second part ‘Giving Strong Impressions as a Speaker’, she introduced a keyword, 4P (Power, Pitch, Pause, Pace). During the lecture, not only did she provide special attention to The CAU students, but also made the students become part of the lecture by inviting students to the stage to experience her keywords. By seeing her enthusiasm students were incited, and they were eager to be part of the lecture. Ending the second section, she emphasized practicing and doing by saying the famous saying of Confucius, ‘I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.’

At the end of the lecture, a student requested that Na give a special word for the CAU students. To answer that, Na said, “I heard that university students these days are always preparing for their future job. I want to remind students that university life is the freest time you will ever get in your life and it is never coming back. So do whatever you want to do, such as dating and reading books that are irrelevant to your major. Various activities, like travelling and volunteer work, is recommended. And make an asset of having many life experiences. Her last words for CAU students were, “Dream big, and work hard”, encouraging CAU students to dream big, challenge themselves without end, and always work hard. After the lecture, Na and the student who went up to the stage had a pleasant dinner with The Dean of General Education Department, Cho.

Interview with the student after lecture. (Lee Jin-ju, Sophomore, English Education Department)

CAH: How was the special lecture given by Na Seung-yeon?

Lee: It was great. I learned more than I expected. I audited this lecture, because I have to present myself in my class and I thought I could get useful information from this lecture. To my surprise, not only did she give information about special lecturing, but also gave useful tips to become a good speaker. Also the last words that she gave us were very impressive. I wish I had volunteered to go up to the stage and experience the speaking skills. However, without actually experiencing it, I learned a lot. I think she gave us useful tips for our future and life lessons that can help us be better persons.

CAH: What were the most impressive words?

Lee: Confucius famous saying. I think that will help me when I’m studying, when I’m in the lecture, and many other activities that I’m going to be facing. That was my life lesson from this special lecture. Also when she invited the student to the front and made them read and practice the speaking skills, 4P. I wish I was them.
