In Chung-ang 人 most prominent bulletin board, most of the writings were about applying double-major classes. Students complained that it's hard to take classes because there weren’t many seats remaining in the classes. One of the students asked 'How can I take classes if there are only one or two seats left?' Besides, there are writings titled 'I feel great desire to cancel double-major. Please improve the system' and 'Where are double-major students’ rights?'
l         What is double-major system?
The requirements needed to apply for double major degrees are that freshman students need to have completed at least two semesters of their chosen field while transfer students need to have completed at least one semester. Their GPA must be higher than 2.00. The number of students who take double-major is controlled by considering a seating capacity in the double-major department. School evaluates applicants' credit as an appraisal standard. Students should at least complete credits which are required for graduation. Multi-major means studying more than one additional major. Double-major, fusion major, linked major (connected major), self-designed major are all examples of multi majors. Since 2009, minor has been excluded from multi majors. Also, the number of credits required has increased since 2011. Double-major system has been reinforced. Students used to take 32 credits to finish double-major course but rules have been changed to take more than 45 credits. Also students who take intensified major should finish 66 credits which are half of the credits required for graduation.
A lot of students want to have double-major degree because people think it's more competitive than those who finished only one major degree. Even though a double-major system has beneficial merits, students are stressed when applying for double-major classes. The reason is that most students hope to get a double-major degree in top majors such as Business, Advertising &Public relations, Economics and Psychology but there are no seats left for that many students. Thus students usually get stressed out while applying classes compared to other universities. For example, Sogang University accommodates about 100% students' commands because they have smaller number of students than CAU.

l         Interview with student
Park Kyu-yeon major: Economics
1. What is the most difficult thing while taking double-major classes compared to just one major?
There are many credits to finish double-major course. However there are apparently too little or no seats left for students who take double-major course. It's unclear whether the double major students can finish all their courses in a regular semester. If I schedule the double major courses first, I fail to apply for my other major economics. I regret not applying credit exchange program with other universities because they provide many seats so that I won't feel frustrated while applying the courses.

2.What do you think is the best solution to solve this problem? and Why?
The best solution is to increase the number of seats. It's good to increase the seats but I think it isn't helpful just to increase the seats for only students who take classes as their major. I don't mean to increase the seats but I hope majors where there are students who take double majors will also increase the total student capacity allowed in a class. I think basket system (students put whatever classes they want to take in the basket) is also a good way to solve the problem.

l         Interview with Provost of Academic Affairs, Hahn Sang-jun
Chung-ang Herald visited Academic affairs office to know more about double-major system and solve the problems that students complained about.
1. Is double-major obligatory? Or optional?
The double-major system is absolutely optional. Many students misunderstand the double-major system. They think they have to finish double-major course before they graduate. However, that’s not true. Students choose double-major selectively by their choice, which means it is not compulsory to enter double-major course. Instead, students can choose to take fusion major, linked major (connected major), self-designed major and intensified major. Autonomously, Students decide their own courses. Yet among multi majors, students prefer double major.
2. Why do students prefer double major these days?
About 40% of CAU students want to finish double-major. That’s because society wants people who have professional knowledge in more than two fields. For example, there is one student who only majored in English language and literature and another student who majored in both English language and literature and Economics. The latter person has more benefits than the former person. Because there are a lot of people who are good at English nowadays, society wants people who not only are good at English but also have professional knowledge in other fields.

3. Why do students have problems applying for a double-major?
Double-major system is controlled by students' preference. Merely, the problem is that a large number of students focus on popular majors. The most popular majors are Business, Advertising & Public relations, Physiology and Economics. Even though a lot of students prefer the most popular majors, each major has a limited number of students to be accommodated. That's why students have problems when applying for a double-major.

4. In student interview, Park Kyu-yeon made a suggestion to increase the number of seats to solve the problem. Can you expand student capacity allowed in the class to avoid more difficulties?
Yes, we are certainly planning to increase the number of seats by cooperating with departments. However, it's not that easy of a problem. Think about this. If there are only 5 professors, 100 students who major only in one field and 300 double major who come to take classes, how can five professors teach that many students? It is certainly a difficult problem to solve in a short amount of time but we are trying to solve it with other departments step by step and slowly adjusting to the numbers of increasing students who wants to apply for double major.

7. Do you have solutions to solve this problem?
Yes, we aware this serious problem and we are certainly making efforts to solve the problem. The first solution we are planning to do is to increase the number of seats. We will discuss with all majors in the departments to expand the number of students to be accommodated. The second solution is to make other classes only for students who take double-major courses. This solution will be executed when there are too many double-major students.

The academic affairs office does their best to improve the educational environment. They make solutions to minimize students’ complaints. According to the academic affairs office, the original purpose of double-major system is to expand the students’ right of choice. Nowadays, a lot of students want to have double-major degree because students would like to be professionalized in various fields. So the school accepted their demand and made the system for students. Yet, the problems which students faced will be solved gradually by Academic Affair’s help. CAU students, let’s be professionals in various fields like society wants us to be.
