From September 11th to 27th, “Seminars for Learning about Africa” would be held at CNN the Biz of Shinchon from 7p.m. to 9p.m. It was put on by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT). On Tuesday, September 11th the lecture was given by Jang Yong-kyoo who is a professor from HUFS (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies) and also a head of the Africa Research Center. He lectured about “The History, Migration and Settlement of Africa.” About 130 people came to listen to the lecture. Looking at the lists of students who came to listen to the lecture, most of them were University students. There were some CAU students, but because the seminar was held in Shinchon, most of the students were from the schools near there; Yonsei, Sogang , and Ehwa Womans University.
Africa is a continent which seems like an island because it is surrounded by the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, and the Mediterranean. Most people think that Africa does not have exchanges with other continents frequently and considers it to not have history because of the feature of geopolitics. The professor lectured that Africa also had exchanges with other continents since ancient times endlessly and formed civilization through them. The student from CAU said, “The lecture was very helpful. Because I did not know much about Africa, only black people came to my mind whenever I think about Africa. From this lecture, I could learn that Africa also has a history. I would like to listen to the upcoming lecture about the economics of Africa.”
The lectures were held every Tuesday and Wednesday until September 27th. There will be various lecturers and topics. There would be a lecture about the economy, politics, and international cooperation of Africa. Also, an Africa traveler would lecture about “the real Africa” which people do not know by showing the pictures she took. CAH hopes that the seminar would help CAU students to learn about the Africa more deeply.
