In the world, there are many kinds of LOVE. What kind of love do you dream of? There are many loves which are easily started and broken, but there are also many people who really want to have pure love where you might even die for someone. For the title of this musical, “Two men” is more appropriate than “Two cities”. Let’s dream of pure love once again.

Two Cities, Not Two Love Stories
Painful one-sided love by Sydney Carton
Sydney Carton was a drunken man who despises the world. However, by meeting Lucy Manette who knows his weak inner side, he fell in love. The moment when he falls in love, he sang a song with the lyric “Is the world that beautiful?” The love changed the negative man to a very warm person who began to read fairytales to Lucy’s daughter every night. His love is the main story of this musical but it is quiet tragic. Lucy to whom he fell in love, already fell in love with Charles Darnay whom she met on a ship. Sydney Carton just gave Lucy and her family unconditional love. When Charles Darnay came to a crisis and died, there was a chance for Sydney Carton to posses Lucy’s love. However he chose Lucy’s happiness instead of the love he might have with her. He knows that Lucy is happier when she is with her lovely daughter and husband than with him. He does not hesitate even to die. Is there a more holy love than the love for which devotes one’s life? Sydney carton’s love is the dream of every woman. At the same time, it is the most tragic, painful one sided-love.

Beautiful love of Lucy Manette and Charles Darnay.
Lucy Manette and Charles Darnay fall in love with each other on a ship. The fateful meeting, reminiscent of the movie “Titanic”, came with the romance for us who wonder, is it possible to fall in love at first sight? When Charles proposed to Lucy, she said,“why do you drag such a long time to propose?”. They already knew their love for each other, but the moment when they confirm their love, the audience feels envy and romance at the same time. The reason that we congratulate this couple, although we know Sydney Carton’s one sided love, is that we can feel their love not only through the story but also through their acting. Making one’s own family by meeting who we love and who loves us forever is everyone’s dream. It is the most basic love. We always dream of Lucy and Charles’s beautiful love.

The pure love of a girl who works in the laundry
A girl, who is falsely accused, helps noble men and Sydney, who decided to die for Lucy. They meet on the verge of death. A laundry girl recognizes that Sydney does not have to die but he chooses death for his love. She believes him because of his comfort about death and his courage. Her last earnest request is to hold his hands before she go to the guillotine. He is the person whom she can believe in while on the verge of death, and who can give trust upon fear. The trust and the love of a girl shows us that love is not only for couples. The musical leaves us with the question of who might hold our hands when we die. Maybe the purest love which this musical shows is not Sydney’s one sided love, but a laundry girl’s love.

The musical “Two Cities” is about a love story but it is more closely related to a historical play. The awesome story, which spread within London and Paris, attracts the audience. The historical background, the revolution of citizens, and revenge are the main elements of the story in this musical for most of the 3 hours. However, at the end of this musical, the most impressive memory is the love story of the two lovers. How about thinking about it slowly again by reading the books of Charles Dickens after the musical?

Background knowledge
The French Revolution
Before the French Revolution, there was a caste system under the king. The caste system is composed of priests, noble men, and citizens (the 3rd position in the caste society). During the French Revolution, the citizens fought against the king and nobles who abused their power. They also abolish the unfair and illogical system. The background of the musical “Two Cities” is during this period so you can understand more easily if you know about the French revolution.

The Storming of The Bastille
The Storming of The Bastille (Prise de la Bastille) is on 14th July, 1789. Citizens attacked the prison which is called Bastille. This event is the starting point of the French Revolution. In this musical, the word ‘Bastille’ appears frequently and it is very important event of that period so you must know about this event.
