Interview with Yang Yeon-joo (Department of Sociology)

CAH: Why did you decide to study at Corvinus University of Budapest?

YANG: When choosing a university, I tried to consider whether I would be able to travel to Europe often, enjoy foreign cultures, and experience the peaceful life of Europe. The number of Korean students and a reasonable tuition price were also entered into my considerations. While looking through universities, I found that Corvinus University of Budapest required a relatively higher English score than other universities, which caught my eye. I then searched about Budapest on the Internet and was fascinated by the beautiful view of the city at night and the atmosphere. It was the perfect image of Europe that I had pictured, and all the other requirements were also satisfying so I applied for Corvinus University of Budapest as my first choice.

CAH: Is there any foreign friends you made there that you especially remember fondly?

YANG: Cherrie and Joanne, the very first Hong Kong friends that I’ve made in Budapest are most memorable. I first became friends with them through Facebook, and we did many things together such as shopping, traveling, home baking, and much more. When weather was nice, we went on a picnic to Margaret Island by the Danube River. We had many enjoyable experiences while staying in Hungary.

CAH: Budapest is famous for beautiful views at night. Do you have any memories related to it?

YANG: Seeing the views at night of the Buda Castle, the Szechenyi Chain Bridge, the Fisherman’s Bastion, and the Hungarian Parliament Building along the Danube River on a ferry is most memorable. No matter how many times I have pressed the shutter, I could not fully put the beautiful views that I was seeing into my photographs. So I gave up on taking photos and tried to take in the fascinating views with my eyes instead. Looking at the views at night of Hungary in its unique gloomy atmosphere, with a grapefruit beer in my hand is the moment that I still miss and cannot forget.

CAH: Is there anything special about Corvinus University of Budapest?

YANG: The ‘FELEZO PARTY’ is one of the special features of life at the Corvinus University of Budapest. Twice in a semester, the whole university changes to a club. The dress code is ‘luxury’, and as you enter a building, a fancy party like a scene out of movies begins. Each of many DJs turns up the music and the big hall on first floor, where the sculpture of Karl Marx is, turns into a club.

CAH: Would you tell us about any personal changes or thoughts you’ve had after your experience of studying at Corvinus University of Budapest?

YANG: Although it was a short experience, I’ve learned about having composure in my life and a mindset of loving myself more, while staying in Hungary. It made me question my past life and how I used to imitate the conformist life-style of the majority, all in the name of success. Thanks to the lessons I’ve received from meeting many new people, I’ve gained the power to build a happier life.
