“I will write this text from the perspective of woman in her 20s.” This kind of phrase has now become popular on SNS. The writer of the text posts their texts representing various groups in terms of gender, age, or occupation. The text is written in the form of an announcement or an official statement as if the writer represents the entire group. These texts usually get attention from many SNS users who express sympathy for the texts. We can know that the purpose of writing these texts is to get sympathy from many people and as SNS was made to communicate with others, many of you may not feel badly about those texts. However, if you think calmly, you may notice that anyone can feel as if they are offended by these types of phrases and texts. This is about an attitude that an individual tends to represent a whole group. Do you think that an individual can represent opinions of the group perfectly? Although research or a survey could help people get acquainted with some of the voices of the public, this data cannot represent the whole. This is the feature of a group, which is made of a lot of individuals, and it is a fact that cannot be denied. Nevertheless, many individuals on SNS write like they can represent a group. This is clearly rudeness on the part of an individual and it is natural that some minorities in a group who have different opinions to the texts may feel offended. Writing from an individual cannot be written including thousands of various opinions and exceptions. The writing that excludes the opinion of the minority is a serious problematic aspect because it eventually begets stereotypes and bias and thus, those who think differently become alienated. Usually, a third person that isn’t included in a certain group may be persuaded by the text because many people expressed sympathy for the text. The third person may find it hard to get information about groups he/she isn’t included in, so the text on SNS may become an only source from which to get information. So everyone has to be careful about posting texts on SNS about certain groups. Writing by an individual is just the writing of a person. The writers should not think that they can represent a whole group. They should admit that the phrase ‘from the point of view of a group’ is just to make their texts popular and they should take time for self-examination. Also, the readers should try not to express sympathy for texts that don’t include all situations and opinions from individuals of the group. We should not write a text easily that hurts people and contributes to making stereotypes.< 저작권자 © 중앙헤럴드 무단전재 및 재배포금지 >
