Chung-Ang University announced a financial aid program, the recruitment of assistants for student with disabilities, on February 3rd. According to the announcement, the most important qualification to work as an assistant is whether the applicant’s time schedule is flexible or organized enough to handle the given tasks. In addition, the student’s major also takes a big role in getting accepted. Any student, regardless of one’s income, can apply to this program so please feel free to give us support. Chung-ang University and the Center for Disability Services will try to put their utmost effort and devise more effective and helpful programs for the betterment of the university environment and society, in order to provide more opportunities to students with disabilities.

The students who participate will receive 1 public service credit and scholarship. Their tasks are to write notes at lectures, help students to go to classrooms and giving them support in general campus life. Tasks could differ according to each student’s needs. Therefore, students with strong service spirit and high responsibility should participate in this program. However, there was a problematic aspect behind this program, which CAH found out about through an interview with Kim Jae-young, who is a student in the Department of International Logistics.

Voice from CAU

CAH: Did you know that there was an assistance program for students with disabilities?

Kim: No I was never aware of such program. I think it would really be helpful to students with disabilities because our campus is quite difficult to move around since the hills are very steep. They surely need help. I am very glad to know that CAU is putting more effort into such aspects for the betterment of our campus.

CAH: What do you think CAU should do to further promote a better environment for students with disabilities?

Kim: The program would surely benefit both of the students. However, I think the university should pay more heed to building a better entrance at the student support center. Currently, it is quite hard for students with disabilities to get in by themselves. They need someone to open the doors to get into the center.
