France, the Country of the Macaron? New president: Macron!

Have you ever heard about the president who is 39 years old? Unlike in Korea where old people usually are chosen as president, a young candidate become the president of France. His name is Emmanuel Macron, and he has gotten attention by making a new centrist party. He does not belong to the Socialists or the Republicans and finally he was elected as the president of France on the 7th of May. He graduated university from the sciences and worked at Rothschild Bank. Not only that, he took part in the cabinet of Francois Hollande as the Economy and Industry Minister.

The party that he made is an association for political innovation, called “En Marche” which means “advance.” The party is a moderate and soft-ruling party. Thanks to the Republican candidate’s family members’ issues and lower supporting rate of the Socialist’s candidate, he could rise up. Also, the pledges that he made, including making France Europe-friendly and corporate-friendly gained public support. The former president of the US, Barak Obama and the chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, sent him positive messages and support. Therefore, Macron could win in the finals.

Especially, Obama, the former president of US, is famous and popular in Europe. So, even if he said that his support of Macron was not an official statement, it nevertheless helped his support rate to increase as Macron uploaded a video wherein Obama is cheering him through a phone call. Also, his love story greatly affected the changing flow of political race. His wife named Brigitte Trogneux is 64 years old. They met when he was in high school and Brigitte was a French teacher and acted as a teacher-in-charge. They felt a special feeling while they talked about the story of a play script every Friday. Furthermore, she was married at that time and the son of Trogneux was in the same class. Macron’s parents found out about this and made him move his school to Paris. However, their true love continued and she finally divorced her husband. Finally she got married a second time, this time with Macron.

As other parties cooperated to stop the extreme right Le Pen, his support rate was kept from 18~24% according to the result of public surveys. Finally he won at the rate of 63.5% in the final race. It could be regarded as a difference of culture; however, a person who can become president of one country, regardless of personal affairs, is quite a shocking case compared to how Asian cultures would have responded. It seems that his promises and hardworking nature are more important than his personal issues.
