On March 28th, the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning announced that CAU has been selected as the “2017 Software Central University.”SW Central University is designated to universities promoting software education to meet the demands of industrial sites. Breaking competitive evaluations among 38 universities, marking the highest competitive rate of 6.3 to 1, demonstrates praise for Chung-Ang University, Kyung-Hee University, Dan-Kook University, Cho-Sun University, Kwang-Woon University, and Han-Dong University.

The Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning is an organization aiming for a bright creative economy in Korea. It supports the fusion of modern science and ICT(Information and Communications Technology), as well as active creative challenges taken for experiments. The number of universities supported by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning numbers 20 this year. The purpose of this is mainly to strengthen the social responsibilities of central universities. Ultimately, these selected universities could make an extreme influence on spreading SW values on fosteringtalented intellectuals to lead theSW-centered society.
CAU has been selected as an SW Central University mainly by transformingthe university application method by combining previous school record-based evaluating withputting a focus on SW Talented studentsstarting in 2018.Students are expected to submit SW portfolios, along with written personal histories, transcripts of school records, and letters of recommendation. Each SW portfolio should contain data that shows the applicant’s competence of developing SW-related programs or having problem-solving abilities. Expanding the College of Software entrance quota to 150 from 120 after establishing the Software Universityis highly evaluated. Also, immersive coding, personalized tracking, and practical field education have been reorganized into the SW major education section. Allowing students with different majors to earn SW knowledge is also an effort to cultivate students holding SW values. In order to spread SW values, SW special admission for peopleover 50 and present educators is also given.
However, CAU headquarters has recently pointed out that CAU’s application to government-specified financial supporting businesses only permissioned from the dean has a problem of procedure. CAU has revised its school regulations regarding the changed quota.A portion of the students fromthe College of Business Economics is transferredto the Department of Computer Engineering and the name of the Department of Computer Engineering has been changed to the Department of Software. Changes in traditional names of majors and curriculum revisions made without the agreement of students and professorsis arousing complaints. Some argue that silence is turning into a tacit agreement and others state the agreement of deans of the university reflects an agreement by its members. However, it is inevitable that the university should deeply consider what every member of CAU thinks.
Picking creative individuals with capability and potential of growth in the fields of SW will certainly allow students of CAU to adapt to the rapidly changing intelligence-information society. Although there have been rough edges in the process, innovative changes will certainly secure intelligence-information technology on a global level.
