Have you ever had an experience where you frowned automatically because there was smoke right in front of you? Yes, there are numerous smoking areas around campus. Some at the front gate of the school, some in the middle part of the campus and a lot more at the back gate of the campus. Since there are many smoking places on our campus, we can also see many students smoke in the smoking areas. However, smoking is not the problem that CAH wants to point out. CAH is not trying to just ban smoking. Rather, CAH wants to complain or to make a change about the locations of smoking areas. Currently, smoking places are in the middle of the students’ paths. There are many smoking areas on campus especially where many students walk or pass by. Why does the school not care and make consideration for the nonsmokers? Many students on campus tend to hold their breath while they walk by the smoking areas. Moreover, they frown because smokes come right at their faces due to the wind or just due to the direction in which they are going. For these reasons, it is necessary for Chung-Ang University to start making some consideration for nonsmokers by relocating smoking areas to another place on campus where it is isolated from the main paths. There are simply too many smoking areas on pathways on campus. This is not acceptable and CAU needs to learn by comparing itself with other universities. When we look at another university, such as Soongsil University, the university has placed all the smoking areas where there are fewer students. They put all the smoking areas on the edges of the campus so that not even a single student breathes smoke or feels uncomfortable in walking through those areas. This is the part where we need to learn from and make some changes. Let’s look at our current situation on campus and see how we can improve our smoking areas.1. Building 203There is only one smoking room on our campus, which is placed at the front of Building 203. However, this smoking room is not even big, so a lot of students find themselves ending up smoking outside of the smoking room. Thus, more students are smoking next to the smoking room than inside of the smoking room. CAH believes that Chung-Ang University can improve this place by placing another smoking room or expanding the size of the original smoking room. This way, more students would be able to smoke inside the smoking room so the smoke won’t be in other students’ paths. 2. Building 301 and Building 303There are also many smoking areas located near Building 301 and Building 303. There is one at the left side of the building and one at the right side of the building. The smoking area that is at the left side of the building should be banned. This is because so many students walk through the smoke, especially when they are rushed in the morning. This place needs to be banned and another spot needs to be created rather created far away from the building. 3. Next to Building 204, Central LibraryThis smoking area is the one that has the biggest problem because this place or path is where most students pass by. This smoking place is located very close to pedestrians. There are innumerable numbers of people who go from the library to Building 310 and Building 203 to the front gate. In one word, this is the most used path by students on this campus. Furthermore, many festivals and events are often held near Building 203 Building and near the library. Thus, this smoking place stands out and noticeably compares with other smoking areas. 4. Between Building 308 and Building 309This smoking area is located between Building 308 and Building 309. This place also has a problem because it is located in the same place where students take a break to relax or have snacks. Since it is in the grass area, many students are often outside during the class breaks and enjoy their short break time. However, it is very unpleasant to smell cigarettes while they are eating or relaxing. Thus, this place should be moved to another place quickly. Is it necessary to have so many smoking areas on our campus? CAH does not see a point in having so many smoking places on campus, especially in the middle of the pathways. Having numerous smoking places only causes negative effects such as harming non-smokers lungs from breathing smoke. CAH is not trying to force smoking students not to smoke. CAH just wants to inform the school that there are many complaints among students on the campus about the smoking area locations. It is time to make a better consideration for nonsmoking students and make differences positively. We need to make our campus a better place to live, play and study. CAH hopes all Chung-Ang University’s students to breathe fresh air instead of smoke!CAH has done an online survey of 113 CAU Students
