Do you remember the character “Joker” who did something evil shouting out, “Why so serious?” in the movie “The Dark Night?” It was an impressive accomplishment for Heath Ledger to act out the best Joker of all time at the age of 29. Unfortunately, he passed away in January 2008 caused by drug addiction, when “The Dark Night” didn’t release. Many celebrities in the world of movies felt great sorrow for his death and said, “We lost the best actor.” Time goes by, and in October 2017, he came to us nine years later through the documentary film “I am Heath Ledger.” Let’s find about more about him, the actor who always tried to pursue novelty.
Heath Ledger’s acting was different with that of the other actors. He didn’t specialize in acting compared to other Hollywood stars. Instead, he chose learning himself. He practiced various angles, expressions, and situations by shooting videos of himself for better acting. Due to these untiring efforts, there was no day his camera fell from his hand. (All these things are included in the movie, “I am Heath Ledger.”) “Ten Things I Hate about You (1999)”, his first film in Hollywood, played an important role since it helped him to get lots of attention from the public. The genre of this movie was teen romance, so after this movie succeeded at the box-office, he was offered many roles similar to the past movie, but he showed his passion to challenge new characters.
His passion towards acting shined in the movie “Brokeback Mountain (2005)”. The movie was about the romance of two men, and he showed characterful acting. Through this movie he received an Academy Award nomination for best actor the same year. And then, he had been cast to play the role of Joker in “The Dark Night.” He really wanted to prepare well for the role, so he stayed inside a hotel all the time for six weeks, kept a diary as if he were the Joker, and practiced gestures and the sound of breathing. It was the time reaching the peak of his passion.
“Kaboom!” Imitating the sounds of explosion with his voice, Joker was a character that has not been easily forgotten in people’s minds. He showed nearly perfect acting, and as a result, he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for “The Dark Night.” Heath Ledger, who always wanted to show new acting, finally created the Joker, the best villain of all time. Although we won’t be able to see his acting anymore, his works will be remembered always in our minds.
