Hip-hop was one of the music genres that had shown manhood for many years. Aggression, ostentation, and rough rap were long symbols of hip-hop. So, it was hard to find a female artist in hip-hop until the appearance of Lauryn Hill. After the big hit as a member of the mixed group “Fugees,” she released her first song “Doo-wop,” which greatly affected the American music scene. This song sends the message, “Don’t be a hard rock when you really are a gem,” to young people who have a different set of values and cheers for black women like Lauryn Hill.

           After she gave birth to a son in 1997, she came to look at the world as a mother of one child. She released her first solo album “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” The use of the word “miseducation” in the album name gives a meaningful message saying that you can find yourself in your life, not in school. Overall, her album has a hopeful story that it is crucial for striving the best at all times and that it is also important to perform to be the best as well. Her straightforward charm in her music, such as what she felt as a mother of a child, the difficulties that female artists face in the hip-hop scene, and the life of black women in American society gave new life to the music market. Unlike other female singers, her album was a collection of various genres including R&B, reggae, and soul, and it stimulated the listeners’ ears. Finally, she took five prizes, including Album of the Year at the 41^st Grammy Awards. It was the first time that a hip-hop album won the Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards.

           After her colorful career, she also served time in jail for tax evasion. However, there is no one who denies she is a legend of hip-hop.
