On July 17th, five pilots died in an accident where a Korean helicopter 'Marineon' crashed. As suspicions arose that the accident was caused by corruption of defense industries, the public is now focusing their interests on corruption among defense industry companies. The nature of the military, which has to receive weapons or related assets from outside, is a problem that can occur at all times. In South Korea, however, large and small corruption incidents continuously happen without a clear solution or preventative measure. Corruption in the defense industry must be resolved because it has a direct bearing on human lives and security damage.
The reason why corruption in defense industry companies cannot be easily eradicated, unlike other forms of accidents, is that the military must obey their superiors' orders unconditionally. Therefore, even if relatively low-class soldiers recognize corruption in defense industries, they cannot protest easily. They believe it is a disobedience of orders of the military. In the case of the military, a lot of information is classified as a state secret because military personnel handle security affairs. Therefore, corruption in the defense industry is not easily disclosed due to the freedom of inspection by other agencies, and even if investigated, it is not subject to strong investigation. In fact, in the case of the Tongyeong ship corruption scandal that was discovered in 2014, it was revealed that a deputy director of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration purchased a 200 million won sound detector for 4.1 billion won. However, Hwang Ki-cheol, a former Navy Chief of Staff, was acquittedalthough he was a person in charge. As a result, the corruption scandal resulted in the absence of a single person in charge. Such incidents of corruption will cause serious problems within the military, such as quantity or quality degradation. When an incident of defense industry corruption occurs, the budget to invest in goods is directed to an individual. Therefore, the goods they deliver will not be in a contractual state is inevitable. This will soon result in a decrease in morale and combat power in the military. To solve this chronic defense industry corruption, the Board of Audit and Inspection should strengthen its authority to monitor corruption. It could become a transparent defense ministry by inspecting defense industry corruption and preventing corruption in the project's bidding process.

Defense industry corruption is an act of sacrificing the entire military to satisfy individuals' self-interest, and punishment should be strictly enforced. In addition, to prevent recurrence of corruption in the defense industry, it is necessary to provide education to soldiers and officers to prevent corruption in the defense industry. Corruption of the defense industry not only causes huge economic losses but also results in the loss of the lives of valuable Korean soldiers. Soldiers who dedicate their lives to the security of the Republic of Korea should now be given honor and respect, not guns that do not function properly.
