"Ji-young, do what you want to do." This is the line from the movie "Kim Ji-young Born in 1982," which was released in October 2019.Ji-young’s mother, who has lived her life as a woman in advance, tells her daughter Ji-young to do what she wants to do. We have been taught to live the once-in-a-lifetime life for "me" and be happy. However, there are people around us who are making sacrifices for others rather than living for themselves. They were stuck in a formality so-called Mom or Woman. Let's find out about Betty Friedan, the mother of modern women, who helped many women to come out of the world.

Betty Frieden, the main character of today’s story, was born in 1921 and has lived in a period when women's social status and strength were relatively poor. At that time, women were expected to conform to domestic roles.Of course, there were women who worked, but they were rare. Against this backdrop, Friedan argued that women pursue a new sense of accomplishment beyond the traditional image of women demanded by society at the time. She also claimed that women have dreams and have their own lives, which face head-on with conventional wisdom in society. Her thoughts can be found in her 1963 book, "The Feminine Mystique." Starting with the question " Was the life of a woman really happy?", it begins to question in earnest the 'life', which supportthe good husband and young children. This book was the beginning of a new feminist movement, and in 1966 she established the National Organization of Women (NOW), the largest women’s organization in the United States. Since then, Frieden took the lead in revising the Constitution for practical equality by launching the Equal Right Amendment (ERA) movement. The ERA amendment aims to ensure that all Americans have equal rights regardless of sex (to eliminate the distinction between men and women), indicating that she did not claim that women were superior. Frieden was just trying to break away from the stereotype of "sex" like women and men and secure the rights that women can also enjoy as human beings. However, her move did not get favorable responses from everyone. Friedan's women's movement was criticized for being "centered to highly educated, middle-class, white women” by some of NOW members. Despite such criticism, we cannot deny her efforts to secure women's rights in the 20C during the second-wave feminist movement in the U.S.. Her leading activities are now the basis for various feminist movements.

About 90 years from the start of her efforts, did the world become more generous to women in actuality? Women are still engaged in a constant struggle with unreasonable society. Along with the #MeToo movement for female sexual violence, the hashtag #MeTooVoter movement, which aims to show women's political power has recently begun. Starting with Friedan's courage, society has begun to change. Although she passed away on February 6, 2006 and did not see a world of perfect equality, she is remembered as "a person who helped us think that being born a woman is happy."
