I always spent Christmas in church with my friends and families to celebrate the birthday of Jesus. But last year’s Christmas was very special to me because I was inside an airplane heading to go Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where the WUDC (World Universities Debate Championship) was held.
After 8 hours of flight, the members of the Chung-Ang University Debate Society(CUDS) arrived in Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The weather was so hot although it was December. On our way to the hotel, we were full of admiration because the buildings were higher and more beautiful than the  buildings in Seoul.
Before the competition, we had time to watch the practice and master’s round. They did really well and that made us more nervous because they were really good!
December 29th. Finally the First round started. After a random draw, we met Auckland and Cambridge Univ. I had a hard time completing my 7 minute speech which is given to all debaters. I really wanted to go back to Korea even though 8 rounds were still remaining. And as expected we got 4th out of 4 teams. Second Round, we met easier teams than Round 1st because of Power-Match. However, it was still difficult for us to get a good score. The biggest problem for us was not our English Skills but lack of discussion culture.
But do you know this idioms “Heaven helps those who help themselves.”? We started poorly but as rounds passed by, our debating skills got up and up. Eventually, our CUDS’s members got better scores.
After 9 rounds, we were all exhausted but we were proud of ourselves. We did our best in the competition and we tried competing with people who use English as their mother tongue.
From the debate, I learned many things. As I grew older, my thoughts wasn’t flexible but after I started debate I am proud to say that I don’t worry about this problem anymore. And debate makes me think about issues all over the world.
Why not joining the CUDS? It is an great opportunity to travel and compete in competitions abroad and it will help in many ways!
