On a sunny day, the Chung-Ang Herald(CAH) visited Yuk Myeng-Shim, who was a professor of Park Sang-Hoon, a graduate from CAU’s Dept. of Photography and successful commercial photographer. Sir Yuk Myeng-Shim has since retired, he is now a photographer.

"I knew he would succeed, because of his character. Park kept his mind on photograph and he had a very strong will." Yuk recalled. Park followed Professor Yuk when he was student. So they have many tales. One episode he recounted was when he always carried his book in a large leather bag that looked like a "Used article trader's bag."

Because of this, Yuk called Park a used article trader. Yuk said while he laughed, he would say to Park "Hey, used article trader, how was your trade?” In fact, He graduated English Lang. and Lit of at Yon Sei University, but he was interested in photography. When he was a teacher at Pai-chai High school, he took pictures as a hobby.

One day, he presented his pictures in the Dong-A newspaper, and he got first prize. From that day, he studied photography by him self. After 2 years, the chairman of Seoraboel Art University (Today An-Seong campus) invited him as a professor.

In his professorship, he didn't order students to take pictures about one special thing. He ordered students to take pictures of whatever they want. And he ordered his students to write their feelings and thoughts of photographs. The class started from read his writing and tried to match it their pictures. A good picture is synchronizing the intent of the photographer with the photograph, like a speech.

"It was a lonely process, because my teaching method was unique. Many people didn't understand my intentions. But now, many students now understand me, and communicate sometimes, so I am not lonely now."

He smiled. When CAH asked about what was his commission in his professorship, he said, "My commission was raising the level of Korean photography to a world level. Making Korean photography has its subject clouded. In a word, Korean photography in its won World, World photography in Korea is what I want to develop."

He also said it is great that today, Korean photography are following his ideas. While I heard his story, I could imagine his passionate teaching as a professor. And I can understand why park recommended speaking with Yuk.
