Tunnel escape from Brazil jail

2005-04-05     HERALD

More than 80 prisoners have tunnelled their way out of one of Brazil's top security jails. Almost all the escapees are still on the run.
The inmates dug a tunnel 50 meters long, under two buildings and beneath the boundary wall at Silvio Porto prison. Only three of the 84 who absconded have so far been recaptured. The tunnel was one meters wide and the prisoners even equipped it with lighting.
But although the escapees set a new record, there were another 41 who turned down the chance and stayed behind in their cells.
