Interview- Exchange student of Turku school of Economics in Finland
Interviewee Lee Hae-woong(business administration, 01)

I wonder why you have selected Finland to study English even though Finland is not an English-speaking country.
I think there are merits and demerits studying in English-speaking country. The merits of studying English in English speaking country is I can meet native speakers anywhere at anytime. And I can learn the slang of English and newly coined words. The Demerits of study English in English speaking country is English native speaker speak English very well they feel anxious when we foreigner stutter English. So they may not want to communicate with foreigner. And there are so many Korean students studying English in English speaking country, it’s more likely that I will be speaking Korean with them and it is certainly not good for studying.  Considering merits and demerits of studying English speaking country, I think over and over before applying for an exchange student. The purpose of studying English is not only to communicate with people who are fluent in English but also to communicate with people all over the world. So there is no need to study English in English speaking country. So I have made a decision to study in Finland.
You attended college but not university. What is the difference between Economics college and university in Finland?
There are various universities in Finland. The most different aspect of college and university is in terms of character of learning. Business Administration, in university, students can get practicable knowledge while in Economics College, student can get scientific knowledge, for instance.
How about Finnish student? Is there anything special in comparison with Korea students?
In Korea, most of students go on to university but in Finland, the ratio of students who go on to a higher stage of education is low. The goal of Finnish college student is not to get accepted by large enterprises like Korean students do. While Korean students attend university, they make records to be employed in better jobs. But college students in Finland strive to find the right job which they can do it really great and want so much. So they want to acquire experience during their college time to find their special abilities.
While you stayed in Finland, where did you live?
I lived in dormitory but it’s different from dormitory in Korean university. It’s better. There are student villages for students. It’s huge and any students can live in. A room is assigned to one person. All home appliances are built-in in the room.
Do you have something to say to students who are preparing to be an exchange student?
You have to study about the country you are planning to go. Know well about Korea and be prepared to inform Korea as a student-diplomat.
