In the silent motion picture days, there was film interpretation!

Before the play starts, a man approaches. You, as an audience member are also one of the actors necessary to the consistency of the story. Who said that a play splits space into stage and seats? You were one of audience members and at this time, you were furniture. Distant enough, but for a step, you would join the actors and players on the stage.

In the era of the silent motion film, there was film interpretation. During this time a movie was a special play with onomatopoeia music (describing words and emotions into inarticulate sounds), and there were side singers, who used mimetic scripts of the whole story.

Because of the unique process, singers worked as translators of the scenes and helped create the atmosphere of the storyline. Unlike a play on stage, songs were the source of information, which included background, conversations, and ambience from sad to happy modes or vice versa.

The story of a lonely man, who is struggling to scratch.

Usually people feel lonely on their birthdays. In the silent movie, there is a man and today is his birthday. There is a candle on a chocolate cake. He cannot be any lonelier than in any other situation. Suddenly he starts to scratch his back but his arm is too short to reach.

The story is a metaphor. Itching does not mean itching. It means a life’s desire. Everybody has an itching point in his or her life. You may also have something you are hoping to reach out and do, but cannot quit accomplish what it is you want. That is why we have to live with other people helping and incorporating each other.

Then what is it that he needs? It is LOVE.

From the introduction on the Book of Greek and Roman Mythology- Finding our lost ‘HALF’

From the introduction of the Book of Greek and Roman Mythology by writer Lee Yune-ki, we can take a peep at the tale about lovers by Aristophanes, who lived during the Byzantine Empire 2500 years ago. He did not intend to explain the reason why we are looking for our other halves, sincerely.

“Each of us when separated is but the indenture of a man…”

He explained that the reason for the longing of another person is he or she wants to be reunited again. He depicted us as indentured, one fragment of a mirror, one side of a galactic contract.

Maybe, that is why we have points in our lives, when we cannot succeed by ourselves. That it is for my other ‘HALF’ to scratch the itchy point on my back and my heart.

Like the tap-dance in movie ‘Singing in the rain’

What is the main image when you think of the genre ‘Musical’? Is it the big scale of the production, the spectacular performances, or the songs?

Mostly, people consider musicals a big stage performance, but you can enjoy something more in a small theater. Due to the volume of the play, there are limitations to controlling various facilities and trifling details. So actors do not just perform but work as speakers, drummers and interpreters of the situation. For example, to emphasize the loneliness of a man the rain appears. The actors wear yellow raincoats, and start to sing a song while tap dancing. Like Donald O’Connor’s part in the move ‘Singing in the Rain’.

Finding Dear

Loneliness can be cured by meeting a new person.

As Aristophanes said, two people meet by accident. He heard the music box singing the song ‘Happy birthday to you’, and knew that she was the one, the other side of his broken mirror.

“Du-geun Du-geun” His heart begins to throbbing. He is not rich, not that handsome, has no outstanding merit to exaggerate in front of others, but his heartbeats.

Interesting characteristics, the motto of this play is speech. Since that point, to meet his lover, there are no lines as sentence or phrases become useless. Instead, to send the message, the play uses four-words depicting words and balloons with a message.

Sad greetings “Let’s part from each other” and “I’m sorry” become bigger when the actor blows the yellow balloon. Yellow means say good-bye just like the situation.

Cartoon Musical Du-geun Du-geun. Cartoon?!

Du-geun Du-geun (두근두근 – The sound of the pit a patter of baby’s feet)

Kong-dak kong-dak (콩닥콩닥 – The sound of the thumbing of my heart)

Dup-seok Hil-ggeum (덥석 힐끔 – The motion of stealing a convert glace)

Ssi-ik Sa-sa-sak (씨익 사사삭 – The motion of lip smiling and the sound of moving fast with feet sound)

Ggam-jjack (깜짝 – The motion of stroking all of a heap)

Beol-leong Beol-leong (벌렁벌렁 – Feel as if your heart is exploding through your chest)

Can you recognize the scene? If you caught, your heart may have been moved uneasily. Without any beautiful adjectives, the play Du-geun Du-geun explains the nervous feeling of a man in love. Sometimes words are not enough to express our emotions to others. So these series of brief expressions are attached to the minds of lovers.

The play also makes a symbolic sound. Beep sound on the cellular phone, which indicates the birthday song. As time goes by, the man is eager to propose and carrying on his torch for her, he pushes the ‘HEART BUTTON’, the song rings all over. “Happy birthday to you~ Happy birthday to you~”

Audiences, let’s play in the play

In a small theater, audiences can play a role in the story as the source of three components of the play’s organization. Usually these are ad-libs structured around a situation already planned. Actors flutter their eyelashes at viewers and let them speak or do something to help the other audiences to understand and sympathize with the future scenes.

Actors abruptly run down off the stage to the seats and hide between audiences. The men made the women stand up, and then gave them a broken broom. With the stick broken into two pieces, the actors chided the girls, and ‘Ssang’ that means ignore. In addition, when he appeared again with that broomstick, he leered at her and said again, ‘Ssang’.

In addition, the actors begin practicing how to propose; an actor calls a woman from a guest seat and performs a proposal as if she is another one of the actors in the play.

Two hearts meet together and combine completely one heart.

Du-geun Du-geun

Her hearts start pumping. The connection was her music box from the bouquet that he had given to her. With the notes flowing on the birthday song, her heart pounds. They sit together on a bench where they first met. A brief glance between two people and birthday song accompanies Cupid’s arrow, which is pointed at each other. Now the two sides of the mirror’s fragments are put together and complete a sparkling mirror image. For now, the man does not have to find a long stick for scratching his itch, and he is not lonely anymore.

Reporter’s tips

Do not hesitate to go to this play, even if you are single. It does not matter. If you wish to enjoy a situation like this, just do it. (Nobody will blame you for that.)

Usually, you can enter the theater 10 minutes before it starts. The early bird catches the worm. Sit on the front row; you can communicate with the actors better than the others can.

All that is left for you to do is to enjoy the moment.
