On November 18, 2011, Chung-ang Herald held English essay contest in classroom 1003 and 1006 of the law school building. Contest itself sounded amazing but the prizes were super amazing. The winner gets 500,000 won, and his essay gets published in Herald’s December issue. The runner up gets 300,000 won and the second runner up gets 200,000 won. With Herald’s reporter’s enthusiastic promotions and amazing prizes, about 60 students signed up through e-mail or paper. What was interesting was that people who are studying in the field that is not related to English signed up more than Herald expected. There were many students from various majors such as economy, business administration, Asian culture, medical school and etc.
On the contest day, both rooms were filled with tensions from all the participants. Some seemed very nervous. Before the contest, editor in chief of herald explained the general information and rules of the contest. The essay should contain 600 to 700 words, the participant can choose the subject between the two, use only paper and electronic dictionaries, and pencil and black pen were only allowed. After his brief introduction, the two subjects were released. First subject was ‘About 80 per cent of university students use smart phones. If you get a chance to develop your own application, what would it be?’ Second subject was ‘Currently in Korea, youth unemployment rate is very high and is creating a lot of problems. What should be done to lessen youth unemployment?’ Both subjects weren’t very difficult but they were both beyond participants’ endurance to write essay in two hours. After few minutes of thinking, some participants started to write, and the other followed. All you could here in both rooms were participants writing eagerly.
With this opportunity, student who participated had a chance to write essay, and show off their essay writing skills. Now professors are looking at all the essays and choosing the winner. Professors should going through tough time with choosing the winner among all the surprisingly good essays. The winner is going to be awarded in award ceremony on 27th of this month. Who ever becomes the winner doesn’t really matter. The important thing is participants challenging themselves with this contest.
