These days, Korean women can’t go around alone at night. It is because women don’t know when or where sexual assault will occur. Are they worrying too much? However, it is the reality of Korea now. The news reports atrocious crimes such as rape and murder every day. People cannot shake off their anxieties. Nevertheless, sex offenders are punished only for a few years. It is the current state of Korea which is a constitutional nation.

In comparison with foreign countries to Korea, Korea punishes sex offenders slightly. People often say “The law-making people will realize their errors not until their children suffer from sexual assault.” In other words, people are outraged at Korean laws. Sexual assault ruins the life of victim and family and causes pains to acquaintances. Can light punishment be enough for the victims? Since the laws are light, offenders are not afraid of punishment. When offenders are arrested by the police, they assert that it was a drunken brawl or an accidental incident. “I was out of my mind”, etc. As a result, their penalty can be decreased. Moreover, Korea doesn’t fully release the identities of sexual offenders due to their rights. Although partial information is made public by the internet, a confirmation process is difficult. Just ‘partial’ information is released. Consequentially, Korea became a ridiculous country, because the rights of offenders are protected while those of good people are not.

Korea must change. Women can’t wander around late at night. Men worry that women might think of them as criminals. Due to ‘the rights of the offender’, all Koreans’ rights are seriously encroached. Therefore, Korea should increase the punishment like foreign countries and notify the identities of offenders in detail. Of course, currently people can check the identities of sex offenders through the internet. However, a lot of people express feelings of dissatisfaction as its procedure is too complicated. What is worse is that many people can’t identify the information because of errors occurring on the internet. Hence, the authorities ought to change the procedure of confirming sex offenders so it is more readily accessible. The punishment should be changed too. ‘Light’ punishment will not give sex offenders an awareness of the seriousness of their crimes. Also, sexual assault has a high second conviction rate. Only when a higher penalty is given to sex offenders, will brutal crime decrease. I truly hope Korea will become a country where people live with an easy mind.
