Korean slang, “Geupsikchae,” is a newly-coined word in Korea that originates from youth who eat school lunches known as “Geupsik” who usually use this slang. Actually, this word “Geupsikchae” started as a hatred expression to degrade teenagers. It has always been teenage slang that makes sense in a specific generation. However, the latest Korean slang seems to be different compared with the former ones. Recently, Korean slang is used by lots of people more than ever and has a huge influence on our linguistic habits. Even comedy programs use Korean slang for their comic elements. We need to concentrate on this matter.
Korean slang of the present has some characteristics: answering their own question, playing with words by listing similar pronunciation of words, and using initial sound. Recently, the number of people using Korean slang has increased. However, some of those people use these words thoughtlessly. They exaggerate and repeat words excessively, and they sometimes even forget the original meaning of those words. In some cases, people use Korean slang not knowing the definition of the word completely. Words originating from Japanese porn, words making a caricature of the former Korean president, and words mocking mothers. These are all examples of Korean slang. The disgusting meaning of these words has come to be forgotten, and many are still using these words as means for pleasure. The number of people who are too absorbed in fun by using Korean slang has increased, and when they want to express their thoughts, they rather look for slang expressions that can be used more easily and quickly than lots of thinking for logical explanation. Perhaps, it might directly be related with the destruction of Korean language. Also, Korean slang can be a new kind of “swear word” and “verbal violence” to people who don’t use Korean slang and are accustomed to the words’ original meanings.
We should realize that the language of a certain generation reflects features of that generation. Korean slang of the present also might show features of people who want new meanings and stimulating things. However, exaggerating the use of Korean slang can make others tired. It is time to refrain from using those meaningless words. We have to concentrate on what thoughts we really want to convey.
