As you walk down the street in Korea, you can see all the same square buildings. However, there is someone who uses these buildings to create a space that brings nature and the city together. Her name is Jeanne Gang, the architect. She always introduces herself to people by saying, "I'm a person who makes relationships." When most people say that an architect is a job of designing structures and cities, Jeanne says architecture actually plays a role in creating relationships. The reason is that cities are made by people's relationships. The space where people gather for various interactions feel like an empty canvas to Jeanne. Let’s now look at out what she's thinking when she fills this canvas.

For Jeanne Gang, the ecology provides important insights. Ecologists observe how different parts of the ecosystem are related to each other. Based on this, she applies what she has learned in ecology to architecture and begins to find ways to help physical space build stronger relationships. This is because she believes that this balance will eventually keep the city alive. Later, Jeanne's project uses the idea of forming relationships as a key factor in design. Nowadays the question is changed to ask "How should buildings change as social relations between people grow bigger?" The building that was created in response to this question is her signature work, 'Aqua'. Aqua is a residential building in Chicago that was built for young professionals and homeless people living in the city. Jeanne and her teammates wanted to build a building to help neighbors get to know each other. So they started to come up with a way to use rooftop balconies as a new social network. They also studied the wind to make the balcony a more comfortable space for a longer period of time, allowing the shape of the balcony to disperse the wind. The building played a role in providing a living space and creating an urban community at the same time. Jeanne's attempt to form a "relationship" was successful. People started to meet each other outside the building. Aqua has had a positive social impact on the community by starting small communication, such as creating a gathering of people living there and making an organic communal garden on the building's rooftop terrace. Jeanne argues that every city has parks, libraries, schools and other public buildings with the potential to be re-examination as a social link. However, she insists that the reconstruction of the space and buildings in the future should be directly related to the people living there, and stresses once again to combine architecture and space related to people.

Jeanne Gang has been creating a new space through the keyword "relationship" among uniformed buildings. This belief is effectively used to further strengthen the positive relationship between people. These new attempts by her show that even simple skyscrapers have the potential to become social connections. Furthermore, it will help build relationships and lead to a life of harmony that she wants. She, and people with the a similar mindset are leading the way. I'm looking forward to Jeanne's future work, saying that people can learn how to communicate with others through design.
