A new semester began on September 1st. By the time they sign up for, or change their courses, students often think about what subjects to take. There are some cases to fill credits by only taking classes. Some students have to fill credits even though they really don't want to take classes or have to fill more credits even if they include all the classes they want to take. However, you can fulfill your credits in various ways other than taking classes. Most students, especially freshmen, don't know much about this, but there are many activities to fill credits. For students who are tired of school life taking classes due to COVID-19, there are other options such as: ‘Reading 40 Humanities Books’, ‘Volunteering for Credit Approval’, and ‘Da Vinci's Creativity Credit Program’. Let's have a look at how students can get credits through these programs.

Reading 40 Humanities Books

‘Reading 40 Humanities Books’ is a reading program for undergraduates of Chung-Ang University (CAU) that aims at building up students' liberal arts knowledge and personality by reading humanities books. It is operated by CAU's Central Library and students can participate in the program through the reading portal site named ‘Chung-Dok’. First, apply for participation in the program on the site, and read books that you want from a list of 81 recommended books by the Central Library. After that, book reports must be submitted through a book report writing program on the site. To get credit, you must submit your book reports within the deadline. If reports of 10 books are certified after the professor's evaluation, one credit per 10 books can be approved for up to three credits. This can be done twice over the course of two semesters. The credits are approved into elective subject named ‘Reading Humanities Book’ in the seasonal semester. Among those certified for book report, students who scored high in the evaluation can also receive an outstanding book report award.

Volunteering for Credit Approval

Volunteering for Credit Approval grants students credits if they complete a certain amount of volunteering hours. Only certain institutions registered on VMS, 1365 site, and CAUNAS can authenticate their activities up to a maximum of eight hours a day. If volunteering is registered for more than 30 hours, you can apply for one credit per 30 hours. Later on, you may be issued a certificate of service under the name of the head of CAUNAS. This program only grants one credit for each certificate, up to two times. Grades will be given as either a pass or fail, and the subject name will be 'Social Volunteering ' or 'Educational Volunteering'. After registering volunteer hours in Rainbow System, the students are granted their credits. First, volunteering will be carried out without any prior application, and within four weeks, you need to register the volunteering activity practice report and activity confirmation in Rainbow system. Credit is granted after confirming the application by the college approval. Students who are interested in the program can see the details at the Rainbow System website. Here, you can see a detailed description of the process for how to receive credit, so please refer to it. The address of Rainbow System site is http://rainbow.cau.ac.kr

Da Vinci Creativity Credit Program

Da Vinci Creativity Credit Program aims to develop convergence of knowledge and creativity of the liberal arts and foreign language fields through the process of students’ self-directed planning and solving problems. The program must be conducted to fill at least 15 sessions, each of which are more than 25 minutes. Teams must consist of at least two students with different majors enrolled in at least their second semester, and are recommended to consist of four to six students total. A feature of this program is that there must be guidance from a professor. The professor should participate in at least 5 sessions out of the total 15 to review and guide the team's activities. Note that not all applications will be approved. Topics related to certificates, language tests, personal hobbies, and leisure activities will not be accepted. If the group completes one course per semester, the subject named ‘Da Vinci Academy’ will also be recognized as an elective subject for the seasonal semester and souvenirs will also be offered to those who complete the program. This course is possible to complete a maximum of two times. The applied courses are approved if the average score of 70 or more is evaluated from the Da Vinci Creativity Credit Program Committee. According to the Da Vinci College of General Education running the program, a total of 12 teams were selected last semester. Specifically, various teams were made, including introductory data analysis, research on global contemporary art, and planning and production of board games.

Many students may be surprised after reading this article. This is because there are many students who think that they can only fulfill their credit requirements by taking classes. There is a reading program of CAU Central Library where you can get credit after reading humanities books and writing book reports, a volunteering program where you can get credit by freely doing volunteering and certifying it through the Rainbow System, and even a way to get credit by planning a creative program with a team and conducting it under the guidance of the professor. These programs are very suitable for developing students' abilities in various fields. Why don't you live a fruitful school life by doing this wide variety of activities rather than just taking classes?
