On July 31st, former volleyball athlete Ko Yu-min's tragic suicide was reported. Malicious comments made to her were known to be one of the main reasons. Since then, bad comments on sports news has emerged as a social problem. Korean Volleyball Federation officially asked the top three portal sites in Korea to improve the comment functions of sports news by August 4th. Finally, Kakao started to stop the comments service on August 7th, with Naver and Nate following on August 27th. However, not only these three sites, but also all portal sites need to abolish comments service on sports news.

First, the pain of athletes due to malicious comments is very severe. Ko said on YouTube channel ‘Spocado' that she received a message via Instagram DM, "Don't think about returning as a volleyball athlete for lack of money." She also said in tears that she suffered greatly from bad comments such as "Are you a volleyball player?" Ryu Seung-min, a member of the IOC called for the ‘prohibition on sports news comments’ on his Facebook page. He said "There is a lack of a system that can protect athletes from external influences compared to the growing social responsibility of athletes. Excessive criticism and groundless rumors about athletes have a fatal impact on them." Considering many other athletes including Ko, who said they suffered greatly from many serious bad comments, the abolition of sports news comments is essential. Second, bad comments continued despite programs designed to prevent them such as ‘CleanBot.’ To solve the chronic bad comments, Naver introduced CleanBot that detects and automatically hides comments containing swear words through AI on April 25th. It has developed enough to boast 95% accuracy in detecting bad comments as it even grasps the context of sentences. However, some slang words that CleanBot cannot detect continued to be a problem. Therefore, Naver Sports temporarily abolished news comments on August 7th, saying, "We have developed a way to minimize malicious comments, but recently the comments have become uncontrollable." Naver, the leading portal site of Korea, also felt limited in preventing bad comments despite CleanBot, and eventually stopped the sports news comments altogether. Finally, malicious comments have continued even with the program preventing them, so it is necessary to abolish sports news comment service on all portal sites to prevent malicious comments.

Although the comment culture has started thanks to the development of the Internet, there have been problems with bad comments on portal sites. As a result, many athletes, including Ko Yu-min, suffered mental pain, but the problem continued as bad comments have not disappeared in spite of the programs designed to prevent them. Under these situations, abolishing sports news comments of all portal sites is the best way to prevent malicious comments. As three leading portal sites of Korea temporarily halted their sports news comment service, the other portal site's sports news comment service also should be abolished.
