<Beyond the Road> has landed in Korea. <Beyond the Road> is Asia's first exhibition in Korea since its debut at the Saatchi Gallery in London, England, in 2019 by British electronic musician James Lavelle. The reason why we should pay attention to this exhibition is that it is an "immersive exhibition." <Beyond the Road> is a multi-sensory experience exhibition that allows audience members to immerse themselves in the art world through 360-degree installation art and music. Viewers can freely walk around 33 spaces in the exhibition hall and experience sound, visual art, and technology with their entire bodies. With the 360-degree installation art of <Beyond the Road>, you will be able to relieve a new experience where you can feel the music with all five senses. Isn't it more exciting because it's the first exhibition in Asia? Let’s Fall into the world of <Beyond the Road>!

From Spectator to Participant, Immersive Exhibition

The immersive exhibition makes the audience not just view the artwork, but directly participate in the performance. Therefore, each audience can have a different appreciation and experience depending on the space chosen by the individual. Unlike general exhibitions with explanations of the works, there are no explanatory phrases next to the works and no maps or instructions on the space. Visitors are not directed in one direction through the 33 spaces, but are in the form of escaping the maze, so you don't have to move in a set order through the exhibition. In addition, the exhibition hall is very dark, so it might be a little scary when moving to another room, but you will look forward to finding each new room. The attraction of <Beyond the Road> is that you can enjoy the work as your body leads depending on the lighting and music. The 100 speakers and colorful lights installed in the exhibition are the key points. Different music flows from each room, so if you listen carefully and follow the music, you can listen to various sounds as you explore. The passageway to the room is dark, but each room has a light, so you can follow the light and find a new room. If you rely on lighting and music to find a room, you will naturally experience <Beyond Road>.

Rooms Collaborated with Various Artists

The Red Room

<Beyond the Road> provides rich contents in collaboration with various artists such as musicians, film directors, and perfume designers. The Red Room, a collaboration with perfume designer Azi Glasser, is the best example of an immersive exhibition. While viewing the exhibition, the smell of strong perfume stimulates the nose. If you follow the smell, you will find a red room that gives you a strong and passionate feeling. If you go there, you can see pyramid-shaped installation art with more than 100 perfume bottles on display. The red light and strong perfume smell in the room stimulate your eyes and ears, allowing people to realize the immersive exhibition.

The Pink Room

In the Pink Room, which was a collaboratioin with Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle (whose work "Trust" will be shown on TV). The video is somewhat strange, and the music flowing out is odd. You will realize this is a multi-sensory exhibition through this work because it stimulates your vision, hearing, and your body. Also, the video is accompanied with a throbbing sound, so you may feel nervous. Thanks to the collaboration, the audience can experience more various kinds of works.

Artworks Only Available in Beyond the Road Seoul

Magpie Sculpture

Unlike <Beyond the Road> in London, there are works with Korean elements in <Beyond the Road> in Seoul. The first work is titled <Someone on the Phone> with a magpie statue on top of the phone. Why did magpies appear in the exhibition? James Lavelle, who was interested in magpies, considered how to use them in Korean exhibitions. Through his research, he learned the meaning of the magpie as a bird that delivers good news in Korea and thought introducing a good British exhibition to Korea was like a magpie's image. He cast artist Polly Morgan to help with this exhibit. Polly Morgan is an artist who works with motifs from Korean folktales and has produced works related to magpies in recent years. Moreover, it is even more meaningful because it is a magpie sculpture created by a foreign artist.

Tiger Embroidery

The second work is titled "Fortune Calls," which features embroidered tigers. If you look closely at the work, the tiger embroidery is very dense. The tigers also looks very brave. A telephone is placed in front of a tiger embroidery, just as a magpie statue was placed on the phone before. Like the title "Fortune Calls," James Label seems to have interpreted tigers as bringing good luck. As <Beyond the Road> is held in Seoul, James Label intentionally considered putting Korean works in the exhibition. It would be nice as a Korean to meet a work with a Korean element in this exhibition.

Graffiti

A Korean artist also participated in <Beyond the Road>. Nana, a street artist, was invited by Stephen Dobbie for the exhibition in Korea. She usually works on graffiti. She participated in two Artworks: <BTR Phone Booth & Bus Stop> and <Artnam77>. <BTR Phone Booth & Bus Stop> is installation art, this artwork consists of a graffiti-painted telephone booth and bus stop. Due to the unique and colorful graffiti, it feels like we are overseas. <Artnam77> is a graffiti tunnel with both walls plastered with graffiti. The background color of graffiti changes to blue, purple, and green depending on the lighting, so it is fun to see a mysterious and colorful tunnel. Also, it is interesting that the work has an exotic mood.

<Beyond the Road> is an immersive exhibition with no explanation of the artworks or any guidance. This is enough to arouse the audience's interest because they can decide how to appreciate the artwork on their own. Especially, since experiencing 360-degree installation art isn’t common in Korea, it could be a special opportunity. The 33 spaces created by various artists and the installation art that spins 360 degrees will naturally make you fall into art. In addition, with more than 100 speakers, sound and music embodied with various lights, videos and visual effects will help the audience feel the music with all five senses. <Beyond the Road> is the exhibition where you can enjoy a variety of attractions and new musical experiences. Do not hesitate to go to <Beyond the Road>!
