Let’s Apply for Diverse Majors! Multiple Majors and Minors

Multiple Majors

           Multiple majors refer to studying other majors equally with your main one. Students must fulfill not only the required subjects of departments in multiple majors but also the minimum required units for the graduation requirements of those departments. However, students cannot do multiple majors in the College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, etc. Also, multiple majors in the same or similar departments in the same or on the other campus are unable to be chosen[1]. In addition, it is impossible to reapply at the department that you have canceled during multiple majors in the past.

Minors

           Minoring in something mean studying a small bit of a specific major. Limitations in the application are the same with multiple ones. Students should finish more than 21 units among the chosen minor’s subjects. Also, it is impossible for students who entered or transferred into the College of Education or the departments with teacher training certificates to get a teacher’s license. Students must take other multi majors or an intensive major course as minor courses do not count towards graduation requirements. You can withdraw your cancellation for a minor only once.

Let’s Study in Combination! Combined Major, Convergence Major, and Self-designed Majors

Combined Major (Inter-departmental Major)

           In a combined major, you can connect more than two of the following departments: Restaurant and Food Service Management, Marketing and Logistics Management, Public Enterprise Management, Public Norms, Global Korean Studies, and Public Officials Appointment. The minimum required units are 36. The range of admitted redundant subjects’ units is less than 1/3 of the minimum required units when subjects in the main major overlap with combined or convergence major ones. Foreigners who entered with an English track can only apply for Global Korean Studies.

Convergence Major

           Students can interrelate more than two departments via convergence majors, and can even choose courses irrelevant to their major. There are ten courses in convergence majors: Financial AI, Cultural Contents, Entrepreneurship, Game & Interactive Media, Software Humanities, Tech-Art, Cybersecurity, Software Venturing, Cultural Diversity, and K-Culture. All require 36 units, except Financial AI which requires 45. Check specific curriculum and explanation on CAU’s website.

Self-designed Majors

           With self-designed majors, students can design a curriculum by utilizing existing subjects without limitations between campuses. You must take more than 36 units for the minimum required units, and up to 6 units of redundant subject’s units are accepted when the main major’s subjects overlap with self-designed majors’ ones. Experiments & practice subjects are unavailable, and the curriculum must consist of more than 3 majors including the main one. The range for the curriculum’s units is from 54 to 78. However, you cannot graduate by setting the self-designed majors as a single major, since combined, convergence, and self-designed majors are second or third majors.

How to Apply and Precautions

           Freshmen who have completed 2 semesters and transfer students for 1 semester with a minimum GPA of 2.0 can apply for multi majors. However, applications are not possible during one’s graduation semester. To withdraw multi majors, submit each Drop Application Form to the Administration Office of the department you originally belong to or send it via e-mail. The earned units during the multi majors are admitted as general education courses or elective subjects’ on a case by case basis after withdrawing from your multi major. You can require to admit the same subjects with multi majors except for the one you chose, as the multi majors’ units with permission[2]. The main major only appears on the diploma when failing to earn all units for multi majors since completion of them is due by graduation. It is possible to postpone the main major’s graduation until earning all units for your multi majors. The subjects’ units of the potential multi majors before the permission for taking multi majors can transfer to potential ones’ units. Application is available twice based on the permission for applications, as the number of applications is not counted at failure.
