On September 22nd, Chung-Ang University (CAU) announced that it will change the criteria for accreditation of Chinese character proficiency in the graduation certificate system starting in the second semester of 2022. Before, students majoring in humanities, social studies, natural science, and medicine had to obtain grade 3 or better on the Chinese character proficiency test to graduate. Students majoring in Arts and Physical Education had to obtain grade 4 or better. However, after the change, anyone who achieve a grade of 4 or better shall be allowed to graduate. Furthermore, the duration of validity for the test had changed since the second semester of 2022. Before, the validity period of Chinese character certificate was five years, but now there is no limit of validity with the Chinese Character certificate. This change is likely to lessen the pressure of CAU students who have to obtain the certificate in order to graduate. The criteria for accreditation had also changed in the case of completing courses at CAU without taking the Chinese character proficiency test. Before, students had to take more than two classes related to Chinese characters, but now, they can just take one class. Moreover, from the second semester of 2022, the on-campus Chinese character proficiency test will no longer be conducted. Therefore, whoever needs to take the test should take it individually at a place where the examination is supervised.
