The following statement was posted on the British Royal website and at the main gate of Buckingham Palace. "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow." The British Government officially announced the death of Queen Elizabeth II, who was the “living queen” and the longest reigning sovereign in British history.
After 70 Years, the Resign of Queen Elizabeth II is Over
Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne at the age of 25 upon the death of her father, George VI, on February 6th, 1952. Although she was crowned as a queen at a time when the British Empire's status declined after World War II, she remained faithful to her role as head of the Commonwealth. Since becoming queen, she visited more than 100 countries, and in 1977, on the 25th anniversary of her accession, she made a name for herself by inviting the leaders of 35 British Commonwealth countries to the celebration. She worked with 15 prime ministers in her 7 decades of reign and became the symbol of the UK. Then, in April 2021, after her husband Prince Philip passed away at the age of 99, the queen's health rapidly began to deteriorate. In particular, after being infected with COVID-19 in February, she was often unstable, leaving the main duties to Prince Charles. After her passing, the UK entered a period of mourning for the queen until seven days after the funeral. The monarch who had been so loved in the UK became history and passed away peacefully.
Final Farewell to Queen Elizabeth II, the Funeral of the Century
Queen Elizabeth II's funeral was held on September 19th at Westminster Abbey in London. Westminster Abbey was also the site of the wedding of then princesses Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1947 and the coronation ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Big Ben, the symbolic London landmark tolled once a minute for 96 minutes to mark each year of the queen’s life, announced the start of the funeral. The queen's imperial coffin was surrounded by a royal standard plane, and it was carried in a gun carriage led by the British navy. After the funeral, the Queen's coffin was loaded into a hearse and arrived at Windsor Castle, where the Queen's coronation was held at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. After the funeral, Queen Elizabeth II was buried in the King George VI Memorial Chapel within George's Chapel in Windsor. She was laid to rest next to her deceased husband, her Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip.
“Goodbye, Queen!” Reaction from the British Society
The official announcement of the death of Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace has sparked mourning across British society. Major British broadcasters such as the BBC stopped all regular broadcasts and promptly announced the news of the Queen's death, and citizens gathered in front of Buckingham Palace to pay their respects and leave wreaths and leave condolences. The British Horse Racing Association canceled all matches for two days, and Arsenal and FC Zurich held a minute’s silence for Queen Elizabeth II’s death before the start of the second half of the match. The next day, Manchester United and Real Sociedad also held a pre-match memorial service. The BMW Golf PGA Championship was postponed. Moreover, cricket, cycling, and the British Rugby League were all canceled. In September, Reuters news agency reported, “Thousands of people gathered outside Buckingham Palace in London, shedding tears and singing “God Save the Queen” in an impromptu show of emotion as news emerged that Queen Elizabeth had died.”
Reaction to the Queen’s Death from the World
The funeral of Queen Elizabeth II was reminiscent of the United Nations General Assembly, with the heads of many major countries and royal families in attendance. The media around the world treated the news of her death as urgent news, and governments around the world immediately issued statements of condolences. In addition to the heads of Commonwealth countries, US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and Italian President Sergio Mattarella also attended the funeral. In China, Vice-President Wang Qishan attended instead of President Xi Jinping. The Japanese Emperor Naruhito and his wife also visited. In addition, the Royal Family of the Netherlands, the King of Belgium, the King of Monaco, the Queen of Denmark, and the King of Spain also saw off Queen Elizabeth II. Most of the heads of 185 countries that have diplomatic relations with the UK were invited to the funeral. However, countries that have broken diplomatic ties with the UK, such as Russia, Belarus, Syria, Venezuela, Afghanistan, and Myanmar, were not invited. In particular, diplomatic relations between the UK and Russia have almost collapsed since the invasion of Ukraine, and Myanmar also has greatly reduced diplomatic relations with the UK after the military coup in February last year.
The era of Queen Elizabeth II came to an end after 70 years. The funeral was held, and world heads of state participated and expressed their condolences with one voice. At the UK national level, the process was swiftly carried out according to the so-called “Operation London Bridge” manual. Many changes will take place and are expected to bring about many changes by the queen’s death to the British royal family, the system, and the international community. The global community is expecting the UK to be led well by King Charles III, the new monarch after Queen Elizabeth II.
