Spending a luxurious time with your family with nourishing food such as Samgyetang and Yukgaejang does sound wonderful. But Christmas isn’t just about food; some people go shopping, travelling, or maybe even just spend time watching TV shows at home. The problem is all these activities are not independent from our budget. According to Exploding Topics’ data in June 2021, 96% of Americans spend an average of $1,000 every Christmas season, through buying gifts and holiday items. In addition, annual consumption around Christmas has steadily risen since 2008. Fortunately, there are bonuses that alleviate many people’s financial burdens. The vast majority of firms offer different types of bonuses, such as signing bonus, referral bonus, and commissions, and many companies outside of Korea give out a bonus commonly called annual, year-end, or Christmas bonus. Most bonuses are often given for certain reasons. For example, a signing bonus is rewarded when someone is assigned to a new role or position, and signs a new contract. An annual bonus is a little different, however. Its idea is sharing the firm’s yearly profits with the employees depending on the sale or performance achieved over the year. This bonus is usually granted to employees at the end of the year, and it is definitely a gift that allows people to spend more on festivals such as Christmas. In addition, tax refunds are available at the end of the year in many countries. Therefore, Christmas is better celebrated in December rather than July, for there are financial systems designed to ease people’s financial burdens.
