Fall is a season when grains and trees turn yellow. Fall, with its harvest of golden crops, is commonly referred to as the season of abundance for both the body and the mind. As we gather the ripe crops that have been nurtured over time, our body becomes prosperous, and at the same time, through reading, the mind can also be bountiful. The fall season, with its moderate temperatures, is an excellent time for reading. As fall comes, I would like to share my personal approach to enjoying reading.

First, try reading outdoors. The moderate temperatures and beautiful landscapes of fall will bring a unique sensation. The ground covered with colorful red and yellow autumn leaves, along with the refreshing breeze, creates a comfortable and exciting mood. Engaging in such reading with beautiful scenery enhances concentration. Moreover, reading outdoors, as opposed to indoors, can lead to creative and novel thoughts that might not have occurred otherwise. In my case, I enjoy reading books by a nearby river. Around campus, I recommend the Chung-Ang Stairway, which many students call ‘the Peopero Square’ or the Han River as good places for reading outdoors. Second, reread books with a fresh and new perspective. I recommend rereading books read at least a year or two ago rather than ones you’ve read recently. Over time, humans undergo changes in their breadth of thought and values. This makes it possible to recall different thoughts from when you first read the book. Alternatively, by focusing on aspects you might have missed during the initial read, you can gain new insights and knowledge. For instance, I recently reread the novel Totto Chan: The Little Girl at the Window, which I first read in middle school. What once seemed like Toto’s immature actions now appear understandable from an adult’s viewpoint. Lastly, read books with your friends and discuss them together. This method is especially recommended for those who struggle reading alone. The approach needs several processes such as selecting a book with friends, reading it, and then discussing it. Taking turns and choosing books based on each friend’s recommendations is also a great idea. Through discussions about books with your friends, you can discover new ideas you hadn't thought of on your own. Furthermore, knowledge from the books that might have seemed flat takes on three-dimensions. Given that each friend has different interests, backgrounds, and insights, the shared content becomes even more enriching.

For individuals who have found reading to be less engaging, how about trying to rekindle their interests by using these methods? This fall, I plan to put all the introduced methods into practice. The thought of reading my favorite novels with friends under the blue sky and red leaves already fills me with anticipation. If you've developed a distinctive reading method that you personally enjoy, consider sharing it with your friends. Fall is a season of exploration and openness, making it a perfect time for friends to embrace these suggestions and embark on their own reading journeys with joyful hearts.
