'Artists on Journey in Seoul National Univ.
It was held the 20th General Conference and the 21st General Assembly of ICOM 2004 in Seoul. 'Artists on Journey' exhibition opened in commemorative of the founding of international event. It had make up a plan that painter expressed what to do travel. This gallery showed from the Choseon Dynasty period till now. It divided traditional pictures and modern paintings. Traditional pictures arranged
center of Jeong Sun and Kim Hong-do works. Traditional works deal with realistic description while modern works reflected abstract expression and thought of subjective.
Landscape count on one's fingers in genre of traditional paintings. It reflected the subject of nature in art the Orient. The kerneled thought of landscape is harmony of human and nature. Landscape divided landscape of actual scene and idealogical landscape; actual scene express practical view and idealogical landscape express a ideal land. These are based on altogether nature. Jong Beong, pioneer of theoretical landscape, didn't sightseeing at mountain and streams because he became old. So he draw a picture about imaginative trip. This mountain appeared main subject from modern ages of painter works ,Jeong Sun works and Kim Hong-do. Jeong expressed impressive place with emphasis so his picture attract disposition of subjective. But Kim gave priority to the subject figure with korean specificity. The Choseon Dynasty painters attended not tourist but reporter in foreign country. Private trip painting arrived for official work journey. According as traditional painting made a pretext for map. As you know, it focus on reality and observation.
Modern painting is consist of 5 subtitles. Painters went to foreign world though their pictures. Hubert Boss draw the first korean scenery 'Seoul scenery' in 1899. He perverted the truth from Jongno to Gwangwhamun. Because westerner eyes saw that orient scene was undeveloped region. The other side
korean painter went to foreign countries in the 1970's. Chon Kyung-ja draw first foreign scenary of all parts. Beside account of her trip became best seller. Her pictures is gorgeous colors and it make oneself too conspicuous. Oh Chi-gyun went to U. S. A and he draw 'Empire State'. If you close in with this picture, it isn't given a form. But if you keep one's distance this picture, you'll know scene of New York.
Actual landscape remained expression of painter as ever. Jang Uc-jin painted self-portrait(barley field) over road as journey of life. You Geun-taeck went to Incheon toll gate, so he draw his passed by road. Mobile, Kim Jong-gu works, is greatly interested by young people. This works made a film of spread iron powder at ground. This expressed image of hills and streams. Travel show that painter saw scenery at firsthand. But otherwise journey of thinking to painter.
So artist reinterpreted scenery by experience and impression. The works display abstract technique than
